BBC One & BBC America back with a new scripted show.
Ripper Street , and yes you guessed it, takes place in London in 1889 short time after Jack the Ripper.

A drama set in the East End of London in 1889, during the aftermath of the "Ripper" murders. The action centres around the notorious H Division - the police precinct from hell - which is charged with keeping order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel. 

Ripper Street explores the lives of characters trying to recover from the Ripper's legacy, from crimes that have not only irretrievably altered their lives, but the very fabric of their city. At the drama's heart our detectives try to bring a little light into the dark world they inhabit.

If it is the same quality of Copper, then i am going to watch.

IF it's half as good a plot and as well acted as "Copper", it should be EXCELLENT

must be showing earlier in Europe than here in the States. the BBC America site shows the premier Saturday Jan 19th @ 9:00 pm eastern time over here.

Yes it is also airing on BBC1 or 2  i think, started sunday evening uk time.

just viewed the 1st episode on BBC America last saturday. seems that it's NOT a "continuing story" like Copper. instead it's a 19th century "Law & Order" style different police investigation every week with the crime being similar to the Ripper murders. thought it was well acted by all involved. looking forward to episode two

I have watched 4 episodes now. Pretty good.

watched episode 2 and didn't think it was as near good as the first. the plot was pretty transparent with a "Fagen" type character and his crew of criminal kids. also, as an American, I'm  having problems understanding the 19th century London dialog. Mrs and I are constantly saying to each other "WHAT did he SAY"?

Yes it is not as good as Copper.

I think episode 5 was the best so far. I guess the British Empire screwed over their former military veterans as bad is the good old US of A did after Vietnam.

STILL can't understand half the 19th century dialog, though

The last few episodes have been really good.

made me feel BAD that young Constable Hobbs got murdered in episode 7. the London Police should have just SHOT ever damn  Pinkerton, who were just a bunch of murdering GUN THUGS in real life too.

 I really LIKED the character of Hobbs. he was the "every mother's son" of the series. even though it was a small part, I'm suprised they wrote him out of the series. 

that being said, I thought the last three episodes have been excellent with episode 7 the BEST so far.

Yes it seems like this show have finally found its legs. I think the scene in the bar where the constable started to sing and then the other joined in.. was strong and emotional.

You should also check out Mr Selfridge when it airs at pbs. It is pretty good, but in a lighter sort of mood.
