review: What we do is Secret

And, being as such, I was honestly never much moved by the work of The Germs like I was told I should be. (I was always a Dead Kennedy’s kind of guy, myself.)Of course, I never saw the Germs live, which was, what I heard, the capper, so I am left with a slight indifference as it pertains to Darby’s authentic contribution to an awesomely important west coast punk movement. What I do know, is that the band created itself out of the need to create SOMETHING. And I find that admirable. As far as this film goes, it was good and I do recommend that those totally unfamiliar with the “let’s get up and do something” angst that preceded (contrary to popular belief) the so called “grunge” era, at least use this as a catalyst to spark interest in a movement that began south of Seattle and a decade and a half earlier. That being said… What We Do Is Secret was interesting, but felt (at times) a bit contrived. Nevertheless, it was worth a watch.

The Germs are an interesting case.  They weren&#x27;t very good, and hardly ever played live (and if they did, it tended to end in a riot after about 10 minutes), but there&#x27;s something about them that really seems to capture a moment in time like no other early L.A.punk band.  They left us with a couple of memorable songs that most 5-year-olds could write or play, and one of the great characters the scene ever produced.  Still, I think if you were to have asked someone like John Doe, Greg Ginn or Keith Morris in 1980 if we&#x27;d be still be talking about the Germs in 2009, they have fallen over laughing.  I didn&#x27;t know they had finally finished the movie.  It&#x27;s been kicking around forever.
