review: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

(Five out of Five Stars)

For those of you who have not read the late great Hunter S. Thompson's archetypal novel of the same title, you are missing out. Thompson was an unpolluted genius and Gilliam did an extraordinary job in portraying the classic using the film medium here. Johnny Depp also knew Hunter S. Thompson personally, and is an avid reader so he really showed his understanding of the infamous Dr. of Gonzo Journalism. I hate to be judgmental, but those who don't get this work of art, just plain don't get it at all! H.S.T. was a master of his craft and this is one of his master works. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (both as a novel and as a film) is a perfect blend of madness and the promise of a subjectivity of said madness when dealing within the mad world of false hope and promised lies around us all. For those who don't understand that he was no more or less mad than the average American, well, enjoy your stay in the Red, White and Blue asylum. And watch out for those damn bats! Yeah, you'll see them eventually!

Great movie! There is a bit of everything in it. Some hilarious scenes, some depraved, some poetic. It is truely unique.

And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Give away from me fucker!! I am AHAB!! I love that shit.
