Jim Jarmusch delivers this western as only he can with his Twilight Zone-esque dreamy directorial talent and eye for uniquely aesthetic originality. The subtlety of Jarmusch’s genius has kept him just below the radar of many, but for those of us lucky enough to have discovered his inventive gems, his films have delighted and intrigued for years. This is, in my opinion, one of his best films. There is something about the gentle honesty in Johnny Depp’s artistry which allows him to bring characterization to a role in a way no one else can. Can you imagine another actor as Edward Scissorhands, Gilbert Grape, William Blake or any other roles which Mr. Depp has fingerprinted into our psyche? No… me neither. This is a tranquil, yet stunning film of comic drama and original invention. Simply put, Dead Man is a fine piece of art!
