Anyone know for sure what was in the briefcase that Vincent Vega & Julie were trying to get back to Marcellus Wallace?

I have a theory... but I'd like to know if there is a real true answer if it's just left up to us to figure it out.

Bonus Question....anyone know what the song 46&2 by TOOL is about & what the hell 46&2 means???

    Thanks in advance - CC

Whatever was in the case was definitely shiny but I'm pretty sure it wasn't gold. Thanks for the guess though. I know his name was Jules - I was joking by calling Sam Jackson - Julie.

46 & 2 is a reference to the evolution of Humans. Currently humans have 46 chromosomes. The idea is that the next way humans will likely evolve is by adding another 2 chromosomes to our DNA.

NASCAR-Sucks : Good stuff on the TOOL topic. I knew about us having 46 chromosomes but not sure what adding 2 would do for our evolution. I need to listen to that song again...it's been a while.

Still no thoughts on what's in that case???  Anybody???

no joke - it's been long theorized that it is Marcellus Wallace's soul in the case...and the reason he has the band-aid on the back of his head is b/c his soul was originally removed from there

it doesn't matter what was in the case.  The briefcase is a "MacGuffin" - a term director Alfred Hitchcock and writer Angus MacPhail coined to describe a plot point that is deliberately left vague so as not to draw too much emphasis away from the real story.
just like in Ronin.  it doesn't matter.  Quentin Tarantino said "its whatever the viewer wants it to be"

This is one of my favorite movies, but I can't stand not knowing what's in the case.
The guy at the end robbing the restaurant with his honey-bunny makes him open it, and asks Jules, "Is that what I think it is?". If that was a "soul" in the case, he would be able to recongnize it by sight?
Doesn't make sense to me. Damn, I wish I could know for sure.

you don't need to know for sure.  all you need to know is that muthafuckin case has to get back to marcellus muthafuckin wallace before he goes muthafucka on a muthafucka.  (to use jules talk)

the plot has nothing to do with what's in the case, just what has to happen with the case.  would it make the movie better if it was a million dollars or gold bars or a special letter from his mistress?  no, would it make it worse? no.  it doesn't matter and no one needs to focus on it.

Then why for the better part of the last ten years I can't watch a Tarenteno movie or see Samuel L Jackson without wondering what the fuck is in that case?

I thought it was his soul too...but why would the kids have it? I know it doesn't matter really but it is a focal point of the story. Thanks for all the interesting feedback fellas.

see, you still don't get it.  the case itself is a focal point, not what's in it.

Then why put the band-aid on the back of Marcellus' neck?

Why did the college kids have the case?

It's kinda cool to keep everyone wondering...kinda like the last episode of the Soprano's...which in turn is what the writer is trying to accomplish. So in fact it is not what's in the case that is important to the story-line...but it is important for the the writer to add this element of uncertanty that adds to the appeal of the movie. Tarantino knows damn well it drives the audience nuts to "not know for sure". It's his ego stroking itself by doing this to us & that is my point & theory.

That is crazy, i am watching Pulp Fiction now and was wondering the same thing. I heard the story about the souls and then seen the combo of the briefcase was 666 in the movie so i agreed with it. Anyway i came here to start this thread and there it was, weird stuff. Anyway i googled it and here is a pretty good link.

i think gunners is right. i had always thought it was his soul too, but when i heard it was his soul i was told that in the book it clearly says so. which apparently isnt the case....therefore whoever told me was a liar and therefore wrong...i side w/ gunner.

i cant believe no one figured this out.  jules states specifically that it was marcellus wallace's dirty laundry.  and when he opens the case, it was very shiny.  so it must have been some really cool gold articles of clothing.  that was too easy.
