Saw this the other night, different kind of a movie but still pretty good. Based pretty close to a real life story of a young guy that abandoned all his possessions and made his way across America eventually ending up in Alaska. Don't wanna post any spoilers but its worth a look. One of those movies that makes you think.

Eddie Vedder's soundtrack for this movie is also worth checking out. I just wish there were a few more tracks and that some songs were a bit longer. Definitely worth the listen though.

Good call on all of the above. After watching this movie, I went out to buy the book, purchased the soundtrack and will be heading on a RV trip in the spring/summer all because of this movie.
Definitely go and see this movie, it opens up your mind and makes you think which i find is really hard to do these days because so many movies either fictional or things blowing up.
This movie makes you appreciate your surroundings and to venture out and experience it, hey you only live once, and your always going to be in debt, so why not see the world and not base your whole life on material things.

I think you totally missed the point of this movie, cj.
This kid can't face his problems the right way, you gotta to be kidding me. Luckily the kids the balls and the guts to not give into his family, to not give into society of how it's suppose to be.
Yes, he could've stayed in school, the same school his mom and dad went to just because they wanted him to, get a job he doesn't want to do only because his parents wanted it, then to live and grow up living for what his parents wanted for him but not what he wanted for himself.
Instead he had the courage to leave and pursue his own destiny. How many people you know or even yourself say your going to do something or even travel the world that young of an age and actually do it.

I really enjoyed this movie for many reasons. The story alone was very interesting. Looking forward to readng the book. I fall in between cj's and bean's analysis, closer to bean's though. In order for the main character to shed material possessions and seek "true" experiences he must run from society and, in particular his parents. I didn't mind how he handled his parents, but didn't like how he abandoned his sister.
I think part of what made the film so effective was allowing the images to speak rather than overdoing the dialogue and voice-overs. By this I mean Hirsch's facial features and body language as well as the scenery itself. Soundtrack was great too.
