definately Peter Falk as Columbo all time fav for me.

also a number of cops from Hill Street Blues. Michael Conrad as Sgt Phil "let's be careful out there" Esterhaus, Dennis Franz as detective Norm Buntz, Joe Spano as detective Henry Goldblume and Bruce Weitz as detective Mick Belker. another fav was Buntz "partner" Sid "The Snitch" played by Peter Jurasik. they were so popular together as a team that NBC "spun off" the short lived Beverly Hills Buntz in their 1987–88 season.

For the older shows, definitely Columbo and Abe Vigoda as Fish. Along with most teenage boys in the 70s, also thought Angie Dickinson was worth watching as Sgt. Pepper Anderson.

More recently, Jimmy McNulty on The Wire.

Abe Vigoda as Fish

Barney Miller definately THE BEST "Cop Comedy" EVER with Hal Linden as Captain Barney Miller, Abe Vigoda as senior detective Fish, Max Gail as "Wojo", Ron Glass as detective/crime novel writer Harris, Jack Soo as detective Yemana, Gregory Sierra (was also in Sanford & Son) as "Chano" and Steve Landesberg as the "know it all" detective Dietrich

won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1982 right after the series ended after previously being nominated a number of times. also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Comedy or Musical Series in 1976 and 1977
