Unless there's a transexual navy seal movie, slave based film or a dirty cop drama, Johnny Depp will win Best Actor for his portrayal of Whitey Bulger. He's fantastic. Movie is good but not a Goodfellas or Scarface. He finally was good in a movie where he wasn't a pirate.

REALLY? "finally was GOOD"? how about Depp playing Joe Pistone in Donnie Brasco or George Jung in Blow? was also excellent as Inspector Abberline in the "Jack the Ripper" mystery thriller From Hell which is VERY under-rated

Depp pretty good in the 2014 Sci-Fi thriller Transcendence too. was kind of "arty-smarty" but made you think.

also forgot to mention his early 1994 "bio-comedy" Ed Wood where he played the "worst movie director ever" with Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi

I have a debate going vs. a friend whom we both share many common favorite movies. We generally agree Bobby D is the greatest actor of all time, and that currently Leo, especially when teamed with Marty, is the best actor who delivers consistently.

But he won't accept that Depp is a legend. Blow and Donnie. Branco are classics and even Gilbert Grape was a solid performance, his imdb sums it up "versatile"

I'm looking forward go seeing black mass, going in with high expectations given Nicholson delivered a great performance in the departed, loosely based on Whitey.

Correct. I should've clarified, 'finally good in a movie this century where he wasn't a pirate'... Brasco while excellent was 1997, I'll give you From Hell 2001 and Blow 2001 (what have ya done for me lately?) The Lone Ranger? Mortdecai?... He's been weak for the star that he was supposed to be. Great performance in Black Mass though. Nailed it perfectly.
