Depends what you mean by best. I think the best movie was Identity. No one else probably agrees, but it was scary and a movie, not necessarily a scary movie. If you get what I'm saying.

The scariest movies to me are the ones based in religion, because I grew up in that, so I have little parts of mey brain believing it may be true. The Exorcist, The Omen, Fallen...

    Powerade...

The Exorcist is a phenominal movie and I cant argue that choice... NFL ... You must see that movie!

One of the newer ones I thought was good is Wolf Creek.  The Descent I thought was good too, one of
the better more recent movies I've seen in my opinion.  You cant go wrong with either of those.  Although
I wasn't too impressed with the ending in The Descent.

Has anyone out there seen May?

    That movie is genuinely creepy!

House of 1,000 Corpses I thought was awesome and one of the best in recent history.  And I cant go without
mentioning the best of our generation, Silence of the Lambs

    I liked Wolf Creek alot.

The Last House on the Left was a freakin scary movie and amazing that they did that stuff in the early '70's...its pretty hardcore for today's purposes.

I thought the Hills have eyes was creepy.

But the question starts and ends with the Exorcist.

Silence of the Lambs, The Omen, The Exorcist not in any particular order .........

the movie "Seven" I think should get some consideration, eventhough it probably falls primarily into the mystery category.

I must agree that it all begins and ends with the Exorcist.  That movie scared me to death the first time I saw it and I still get chills to this day when I watch it.

I thought the Amityville Horror was garbage, though the book was outstanding.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Halloween.  Great directing and camera shots in that movie.

I thought Seven was a great movie, but that falls more under Suspense/Thriller, rather than Horror.  Still one of the best of its genre though.  I would put Silence of the Lambs in this category as well, but I thought it was even better than Seven.

    Fun topic.

    Fun topic.

Obviously the Exorcist should be near the top. Others - Rosemary's Baby, The Shining.

But my personal favorites are Eli Roth movies - I think its the perfect balance between gore and comedy. Cabin Fever and Hostel are both brilliant.

Horses... have you seen the remake of Amityville with Ryan Reynolds in it?  I liked it and was really disappointed with the original after watching it afterwards.

Seven still is on my top ten reguardless of genre and Saw (the first one) is in my top 25 somewhere.  I think the Saw movies have really set a new standard for modern day horror.

    Other good ones

    Shaun of the Dead :D

And just fun zombie hunter movies
    Dawn of the Dead
    Land of the Dead
    Resident Evil

And as for Evil Dead it is easily the worst of the trilogy. Closest thing to a true horror, but 2 and AOD were just awesome.

I am not sure how you people are leaving Hostel off this list. If you have ever backpacked through Europe you know there are some shady ass cities, esp. in Eastern Europe, where shit like that really could happen...and that freaks me the fuck out.
