I have been playing guitar for 20 years now and I have been having the "who's the best guitar player" conversation for years. I say that this guy is the all time most talented guitar player of all time. I actually don't even think it's arguable. Andres Segovia, to me, is the first and last name in the "ultimate guitar player" conversation.
I know that rock guitar players are the most popular so here are my top 5-
1) Stevie Ray Vaughn (very easy pick for me)
2) Joe Satriani (famous "top" guitar players pay this guy for lessons)
3) Clapton (no explanation needed)
4) Jerry Garcia (the only player I know of that you can tell it's him in 2 notes, style personified)
5) Hendrix (if this guy lived long enough he would have been #1)
Come on guys, weigh in here. Who else plays? What are your picks?

As a guy who has played the guitar for about 25 years, I have found that I have been influenced by so many different guitarists that it's impossible to narrow it down to a few names. I do have some personal faves though:
The Greatest Jimmy Page: When I was 14 I listened to "Since I've Been Lovin' You" on my record player for about 18 hours straight after I got dumped by my girlfriend. That song made me pick up a guitar and start learning to play. Because of Jimmy Page I learned the joys of open tuning. Page was/is amazing. Other Personal Faves Joe Walsh: Unique style. Semi-easy to play. I love the slide guitar an Joe plays some great slide guitar. Joe Walsh influenced me to play slide guitar. Pete Townsend: How great was this guy? He played better while pissed unconscious than I could ever dream to play on my best day. Pete Townsend influenced me to drink and play slide guitar. Lindsay Buckingham: Just the fact that he was bangin' Stevie Nicks back in the day makes this guy a hero to me. But seriously, Lindsay Buckingham has some great stuff. As much as I think I have "Landslide" down pat....I don't. Lindsay Buckingham influenced me to drink, play slide guitar and bang super hot rock star chicks. Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad
I can't argue with any of the above lists.

I don't think he is at the top level, but I think Todd Rundgren's solo in "Bat out of Hell" is absolutely brilliant. It never gets mentioned, but when he does the sound of the motorbike, and you can hear him in the backround move from the "bike" into the solo it is brilliant. Apparently it was only 1 take.

by the way, this "best guitarist ever" debate gets so heated sometimes. i've seen people actual fight about it. punches thrown. There are so many guitarists out there, its really hard to pick the best. I like to stir people up sometimes by saying that I think Clapton and Hendrix are way overrated. people get so pissed, haha. There is a little truth to it though, people just pick clapton because everyone else does. he's not that great. there are 30 other blues guitarists that are better than him, in my opinion

When you're talking about guys that are at this skill level, the main difference if personal preference IMO. If I could add to the list I would put Randy Rhodes and Jimmy Page.
Like I said though, these rock guitar players have nothing on the spanish classical guitar players like Segovia.

Very true............many great guitarists out there. Some like Santana more than others. Is Rhodes the guy that played for Ozzie on a couple releases?

Jason, what kind of guitar do you have? I have been playing for about 30 years, during that time I have had almost every possible guitar you can imagine. As I am now in my mid 40's, all I play is my cherish D-18 Martin Acoustic. Love that guitar!

Martin DM (dreadnought Mahogany) is my only guitar. I have owned severel fine handmade acoustic guitars my favorite was a Alvarez Yairi Windriver which was stolen from a gig years ago in Boulder Colorado. I have never been much of an electric guitar player. My specialty is acoutic solo.

That might've been the coolest piece of guitar playing I've ever seen. Holy shit was that awsome

Ive had this agrument zillions of times, it cant be as general a question, it has to be divided in terms of pure ability, fame, and inovation with the instrument.
With regard to fame you go to guys like Clapton, Gilmore, Stevie Ray
You go with innovation you get Page, Van Halen
Pure ability you get Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Hendrix
But my personal faves are metal icons like Alexi Laiho (best guitarist in a band in their prime IMO) Dave Mustaine/Marty Freidman (Megadeth), Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
Obviously not including everyone and definetely forgetting some people that deserve to be up there.
BUT!! If you want to see someone literally shred the shit out of an axe, find some video on a guy named Michael Angelo and the video "Speed Kills" hold at least one hand firmly under your jaw for it will surely be on the floor after seeing this
