Personally, I don't consider Star Wars sci-fi - more like a fantasy in space.
I feel the science fiction genre is more about themes (i.e. man vs. machine) and SCIENCE than setting.
There isn't much science in Star Wars and if there is, it's all a bunch of hooey.
Still great movies, don't get me wrong.
Along with Blade Runner, my two personal favorite scifi movies are 2001: A Space Odyssey and 12 Monkeys.

12 Monkeys, great call.
I love plotlines with time travel interwoven into it as long as it's done smoothly, with any kind of interesting complexity.
The Illustrated Man with Rod Steiger based on Ray Bradbury's book fits that timetravel genre. I remember it being reallyinteresting, but I haven't seen it in about 20 years though. Netflix que tonight for sure.
Worth looking into for any real sci-fi fans.

any story by Philip K Dick that makes the big screen gets my nod
Minority Report
Bladerunner
Total Recall
as for others
Alien
The Matrix (not the sequels)
12 Monkeys
Terminator 2
BTW the Stars Wars films are science fiction, since Sci-Fi means fictional science, the presentation of scientific advancements which are fictional (Death Stars, hyper drives etc). Fantasy films involve, for example, Dragons & Elves, which is why the Lords of the Rings films arent known as Sci-Fi, but Fantasy.

Dennis - I enjoyed it. It could have gone deeper philosphically regarding it's subject matter (imprisoning people before they've actaully committed the crimes they're convicted of), but it starred Tom Cruise, so it was never going to go that far. Even so, a good combo of thought provoking and action.
