If one was to ponder the benefit of a first five, here’s how I’d look at it.

You had Detroit full game. Detroit won the first five 4-1. Then the bullpens entered the equation and the game went to 5-5.

The starting pitching edge did exactly what you handicapped it to do. The extra four innings introduced variables that worked against you.

That’s the fucking benefit of isolating the first five.

 understand the argument for the first five, but I still think full game is the better option. Bullpens are part of the game too, and if I believe my team is the better overall side, I’d rather let that play out over nine innings. Detroit winning the first five 4-1 doesn’t mean the full-game bet was wrong just because the bullpen gave it back. That’s baseball.
