Much respect but in this time of year, you really should weigh Manager abilities, team experience, motivation and Post Season records...Kershaw's record had to be important in your math, as should Sale and Price..then take a look at Counsel basically killing his own team for the series in game 1 with misusing his Pen big time...this affected game 2 and probably the series..

Yelich had tremendous numbers even the last month but I can see he's clearly pressing now, and playing in front of his family in LA will not help...the Astros are a champion which helps in that nothing will faze them, plus they're mad they weren't on National TV in prime time vs Cleveland...these are real, legitimate factors not all the NUMBERS from the past Post Season teams vs other teams that aren't playing this week...and we see great regular season teams lose Post Season games year after year due to COACHING...Chiefs/Reid...OKC last year vs Utah, prior vs GS, the Wizards, the Packers, should I continue?

herb, could not agree with you more in regards to the first few paragraphs of your statement. when i was younger, before i got into gambling on sports, i worked at the chicago board of trade for a number of years. we sold trading education and software to up and coming retail traders looking to supplement their income/help out their retirement. we had live trade rooms, proprietary algo charts, etc.. all the best of the best to help people make money. i would watch these people in their chat rooms, i would talk with my clients, and i would see the EXACT same thing as people in sports gambling. someone once told me, all the stock market is, is a giant thermometer of emotions. think about it. gambling on lines and what not, the same exact concept.. a massive thermometer of emotions driving the prices up and down. most of the time, everyone loved going in the same direction. unfortunately, the big banks institutions were one step ahead. do you really think the banks, (or vegas), would be billion dollar industries if they were doing the same thing as everyone else? absolutely not. so, to your point, one must find the value, hold your nose, and go with your gut, even if it's ugly. the top investors, traders, gamblers, WHATEVER, jump out the plane without knowing if the parachute will open every once in a while. those are the value spots. it's how you manage your money, and control your emotions, that will control how you do int he long run. i noticed most traders lose because of three key factors: emotion, making the same mistakes over and over without learning, and greed. they would come up a few bucks, but without a profit target, they would sit try to make more. human error would come into play and before they knew it, they gave their profit back and were in full blown chase mode, digging themselves a hole deeper and deeper. this is where emotion went into full cycle, rinse, and repeat. i feel all of this applies to betting. same concept. casino, sports, whatever. i definitely feel that i have had the upper hand on most just because i understand this and have seen it play out first hand countless times. not saying i'm perfect or don't take my own lumps, because i'm far from it. sorry about the ramble, just my two cents here. anyways, i love reading you work. i remember you saying you went through a rough divorce last season. hope it all worked out for you. best of luck to you the rest of your season
No team is as good as it looks when winning nor are they as bad as they look when losing

I don't like sports. Although I have the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA packages I rarely watch a game. I have no favorite teams and zero emotions.

I turn a profit but some times a very small one that should be much bigger - the reason being is that I am not using serious money so I will make a bet that does not qualify just to have action - not because I want to have action and watch a game - I already mentioned I don't really watch the games - but out of fear that there is a close opportunity and although it does not fully qualify as a play that I would be missing out if I didn't "invest" in that opportunity, even if it's small.

So discipline in picking your spots is also imperative.

Good reads Herb and Baztid thumbs_up

Because, in the first place, betting dogs in September revolves around this concept where, as I see it, the $$$ in sports betting and most markets where human sentiment is involved and human error is the thing most capitalized on, doing the opositite of the public, a wise man once told me: you could make a career out of...and that's it. Don't overthink that he said or else you start thinking square like the rest.

It isn't that the public is dumb....in fact I honestly believe...but it is only because they're usually bigger sports fans than me, that 'the public' is probably the #1 best handicapper of games. But do they understand the investing qualities such as finding value and pinching your nose....going against your sports fan convictions as they're generally unrelated to making money and often used against you? Or do they have the discipline to do that nose pinching and placing bets that twist their guts and make them feel unwise and uncomfortable and deal with a sub .500 win percent day to day? Usually no: And this is, I believe, why Vegas and Bookmakers even exist in the very first place.

And what I like so much about any business endeavor I make the decision to delve into is: sustainability.

There are many ways to skin the cat, and I do believe that going with the grain and being the best you can be and keeping the best tabs and listening to all the ESPN stuffed suits have to say: if you stick to your guns and make a system out of that and are able to leave day to day emotions a non-factor, then you've got money in the bank. Hard work does indeed pay off.

But, and I am not honestly sure, but just guessing on this part: I doubt that the hard work, not factoring value against the public into your equation, hardcore sports fan approach works in the long term. And to me, being a bit older now and thinking about long term goals and thinking about all of you (who I do love and have a desire to see do well and take something out of what I'm doing)....

....I recall what some (not going to name names because it isn't relevant in this case I don't think) very well accomplished older guy, big shot...but very wise CEO of a large company had to say in a Forbes interview:

He was asked, what would you like to pass on as a final thought to young folks trying to start a business of their own as you did and you had a lot of success. What was the most important one or two things you don't regret?

The man answered, and it is something I remind myself of very often: "The best company will never ever assume that, the way they feel now: enthusiastic, proactive, willing to work all nighters because they love their young creation and see big potential....they're always going to burn out. UNLESS....they have a system. A system that does not rely on waking up every morning and being in the mood you were in yesterday.

It is a human trait to have a mood one day, and react to negative news, by and large, with a decreased morale and good news with a proactive desire to continue forward enthusiasticly.

But to assume that, any one of us is some kind of machine that wakes up each day the same exact way with the same motivation and energy, no matter the age (well and it is also a delusion that you'll never get old) is highly unwise.

Rather, a system is the way to go.
And specifically: a system that is automated as much as possible....NOT BY YOU...or your employees, but by some mechanism that you 100% know will never ever have ebb and flow moods....will never catch a cold and get sick...never get a little depressed and make a human error.
Do this and you've done more than half the battle and are on your way to bigger and much more real LONG TERM success which you can compound.

Why long term success is > flash in the pan explosive successs?
That's another animal...I hope most of you understand why the former is much more valuable, but a topic for another time.

To summarize, September is when people direct their attentions to NFL and we have a lot more exploits and 'soft lines' in MLB.
But now we have the playoffs so we just do the same thing: direct attention to the soft lines where we have a plethora of non-marquee exploits: NHL right now is perfect. Not many ever realize it started. Soft lines. Go get em.

I know you all want me to make an NFL thread or an NHL thread, and I may, but I'd like to see you guys do that. PM me for systems if you need. You can cite me as the source if you want, but try and apply the bigger concepts. Look for slow growth. Ignore the guys that pop into the thread and belittle what we've done because it took years. Those guys probably have nothing to boast of that beats it. Gambling is hard....slow, long term, under the radar, steady growth and a system that doesn't eat up all of your time = a solid, low effort side biz you hardly ever even think about.

    Cheers!

I love this! Great read amigo. Some things I do that you speak of and some I could be better at....it’s all a work in progress but it’s something that is mine and only mine. My big advice here and this isn’t to necessarily you because it sounds like you got your stuff together but it’s to all out there: the media, the talking heads, these forums, there are spots to be had that if you pay attention, you can have a lot of success in capping and of course business. All the best amigo.

    Thanks.
I've honestly never known exactly how the green bar meter below usernames is calculated here.....and I should figure that out.
And it is nice to see some of the champs like you, Oldirty, barney and achilles and the rest of yalls shout out.
I do my best. always thought of myself as pretty average because it is just very slow (but steady growth). Glad to contribute positively! Will continue through the playoffs; however, it is winding down here because I really just don't ever bet the playoffs much in any sport. Rarely any soft, exploitable lines. But if we have anything, will post!

Just to recap the gist here of Herballs:

"...the premise of betting dogs late season to begin with: you bet against overvalued, don't-need-the-win favorites."
"...dogs just do their thing for me in September. While all the noobs are losing their money on the first Weeks of
NFL and NCAAF, I'm looking at MLB. After MLB though, I'll start pounding away on all of those football teams
that left a bitter taste in the public's mouth early on."
