That price on the Pirates is high, but with good reason. Their is a term that I like to begin using towards the end stages of any regular season, and the Los Angelese Angels of Anaheim fit the bill. The term is "towel-tossing bitches", and that is what the Angels have devolved into. They have lost 9 of their last 10 games, with the last 9 games all played in front of indifferent crowds in ancient Angel Stadium.
The Angels have no lineup. In their most recent unsuccessful series, their only starter with a batting average over .249 was the immortal Wade Meckler. The Angels bullpen is a veritable clown car of no names. Not a single member of the bullpen was on the Opening Day roster. I have never heard of that happening. And it's not like the stiff relievers on their Opening Day roster were any good, either.
Tonight's starter, 24-year old Ryan Johnson, was getting hit hard from mid-May onward, but when the calendar turned to August, he improved dramtically. In five starts covering 26.1 innings, he posted a 1.71 ERA. Well, shoot. That's pretty darn good. So should we trust him tonight as a tempting +170 underdog?
NO. Johnson got lucky throughout the month by benefitting from double plays at opportune moments that papered over his many walks (he walked 16 batters in August). Johnson did pitch one excellent game in Arlington vs. the Rangers, but otherwise this guy has been skipping through the raindrops while barely getting wet.
The Pittsburgh Pirates sit at 69-72. They are 5 games back of the third Wild Card spot, so they're not really in contention for the postseason, but they have hardly given up on 2026. Did you know that the Pirates have won 5 of their last 6 series? They took 2 out of 3 from the Red Sox, Tigers, Padres, Cardinals, and Giants. They were swept by the lameass Dodgers in L.A., with the terrible World Series frauds barely winning the first two games of that series. The Pirates have won 5 of their last 6 games, with the only defeat occuring in a 5-4 ten inning final two nights ago.
To be fair to the Angels, they're not a team that gets blown out every night. They were actually competitive in much of their just-completed 9-game homestand. But damn, they just can't win games. Twice in their last 5 games they trailed 1-0 late and tied the game with a solo home run only to lose in extra innings while failing to cover the +1.5 runline. It just happened in their last game on Wednesday when a 1-1 tie with the Yankees ended in a 6-3 loss. How demoralizing.

The Phillies already ruined my evening by coming up tantalizingly short in the 1st 5 innings vs. Chris Sale, and now I will risk further ruining my evening by betting on the Nationals and Dodgers under 8 -105.
Fair warning - nearly everything l do this season that involves the Dodgers ends in misery.

3 - 1 for today. Seattle has let me down 2 days in a row. But the dreaded Dodgers have come through for me yesterday and today. So I have to say GO DODGERS, and make me some more money.
