Might be a bit early to discuss thing, but I spent much of the afternoon flipping between the Padres/Pirates and Braves/Mets games. The Mets went into this weekend's series against the Braves hoping to remain in contention for the Wild Card. Sure, it seemed unlikely at eight games back, but even a series win would have pulled them a little closer and provided reason for optimism. Manager Terry Collins and several players discussed it at-length prior to the beginning of the series. However, legendary Met killer Chipper Jones drove in the winning run in the top of the 9th this afternoon, giving the Braves a series victory.
The body language in the Mets dugout following the final out in the bottom of the 9th was actually depressing. Those guys looked like they had just lost their season. Not to mention, Reyes and Murphy both left early with injuries, further hampering a lineup that has been struggling to produce offense.
Things could hardly be different in the San Diego clubhouse, where the resurgent Padres have won three in a row to start their lengthy East Coast road trip. Their offense is really clicking now and today's victory pulled the Padres to 28-28 on the road this season, a far cry from their poor 23-36 home mark.
Pitching matchup is Tim Stauffer vs. Mike Pelfrey. Enormous psychological edge for the Padres in the first game. Not sure of the line yet, but anything at or above +100 will be an auto San Diego bet for me.
Thoughts welcomed.
Additional note: Listening to Terry Collins press conference...He seems to think Reyes will be out for several games. Murphy injury did not look good at all.

Seems as though Murphy tore a MCL and he's done for the year. Tough break for the Mets. I feel bad for the guy, but not the Mets cause Buffalo11 likes the Mets.
Definite mental advantage tomorrow for the Padres. I just hate it when it seems so simple.
"It felt like it was about a 12-hour game and when we came in and sat down afterward, we joked around that we felt like we literally just walked off a battlefield," infielder Justin Turner said. "With the heat and with all the switching around and the grinding and coming back and tying it up, it was tough -- mentally and physically."

Just tread cautiously. The Mets have managed to respond when key guys get hurt. I remember a lineup of Reyes and minor leaguers putting up 7 ER on Cole Hamels.

Pelfrey has been pitching well and has done very well against SD
SD is hitting .229 on the year against righties
under anyone?
The Padres just hit two righties in the Pittsburgh series, including Correia yesterday. They are an exponentially better hitting team on the road, hitting .255 on the year.
Plenty of quotes in the papers and game preview today talking about how good hitting is contagious and can have a positive affect on everyone in the lineup.

Alright, I'm locked in on the Pads at -105. Only 2 unit play of the year for me. I've flat bet everything to this point and could be way off tonight, but I feel this is the best read I've had on a game all season long.

Sometimes it is so simple though. Yesterday I passed on the Brewers cause that was so simple, and the King Felix/Ervin Santana Under because that was so simple.
I should watch Halloween today to get the paranoia out of my system before sitting down to wager.

Besides Mike Paltry on the rubber another thing to like is the Mets infield will be playing out of position with Reyes and Murphy out if the Pads care to exploit it. Bud Black doesn't come across as very "evil genius" though.
