Buehler (6-6, 5.72 ERA) spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with the Dodgers. He then joined the Red Sox on a guaranteed one-year, $21.05 million deal last offseason with a $25 million mutual option for 2026.
Although Buehler has had a disappointing 2025 season, he is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his three July starts.
Buehler will be opposed by righty Dustin May (6-6, 4.73), who will be pitching against the Red Sox for the first time in his career. May is coming off of a 5-2 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins last Monday, when he scattered five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Scherzer (1-0, 5.14 ERA) hasn't thrown more than 90 pitches in five starts since coming off the injured list. In his last outing on Tuesday, he gave up four runs in five innings against the New York Yankees. He wound up with a no-decision in a 5-4 loss.
Scherzer will be making his 80th career start at Detroit's Comerica Park. He's 47-14 with a 3.37 ERA when at the Tigers' home park.
His most recent start in Detroit didn't go so well. As a member of the New York Mets on May 3, 2023, Scherzer gave up six runs and eight hits - including two home runs -- in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss in an 8-1 Tigers victory. Overall, Scherzer is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 25 1/3 innings over four career starts against the Tigers.
Right-hander Jack Flaherty (5-10, 4.77), Detroit's scheduled starter, will be seeking his first win since June 8. He's 0-4 with three no-decisions in his last seven outings.
Flaherty was pulled after just three innings and 78 pitches on Monday. He gave up three runs on six hits and walked three in a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh.
Flaherty is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings over five career starts against Toronto.
The Blue Jays have won the first three games of the current series by a combined score of 23-7.

Gilbert (3-3, 3.07 ERA), a 2024 All-Star when he led the majors with 208 2/3 innings pitched, will be making his eighth start since missing seven weeks with a right elbow flexor strain.
Gilbert is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 10 career starts against the Angels, including 4-1 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts at Anaheim Stadium.
Right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 4.92 ERA) will try to help the Angels salvage a split of the series. Hendricks is 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two career starts against Seattle. That win came on June 6 this season when he allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in a 5-4 victory at Angel Stadium.
