These are the five matchups I’ve isolated today, and this is where my focus will be. As we get a little closer, I’ll share what I’ve got.

Washington is hitting roughly .268 with a .344 on-base percentage, .442 slugging and a .785 OPS against left-handed pitching. That is currently the best team OPS in baseball against lefties. They have also hit 35 home runs in that split

Over the past 30 days against lefties, Oakland has dropped to .234/.297/.366 with a .663 OPS. In its most recent six games involving left-handed pitching, the A’s have produced only a .579 OPS, batting .193 and going 1-5. In their last 10 such games, they are 2-8 with a .689 OPS

Boston’s confirmed lineup is built reasonably well for left-handed Shane McClanahan, with seven right-handed hitters surrounding Abreu and Duran. Tampa’s lineup is dangerous at the top but becomes much less intimidating toward the bottom

The Miami lineup is beatable, and Gasser is better underneath than his ERA. But Perez remains the best starting pitcher in the matchup, William Contreras is sitting for Milwaukee, and both bullpens have usage concerns. I’m out on the one

Ryan Johnson is the target. His season numbers are 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA. Under the hood, hitters have produced a .366 wOBA against him, and his .342 expected wOBA still says his performance has legitimately been below average rather than entirely unlucky. His strikeout rate is only 16.8 percent, so he does not consistently miss enough bats to escape traffic

The Angels have also been ordinary against right-handed pitching, carrying roughly a .700 OPS in that split. That gives Mize a manageable matchup rather than asking him to navigate a lineup that regularly smashes righties
