You say this is a "working class bar" and some guy came up to you and asked you to but him a beer?

I have NEVER had a guy come up to me and ask me to buy him a beer. That includes South Beach, where you would think that something like that COULD happen.....The only circumstance that may have happened is some old barfly, alcoholic that you could push over with one finger might ask you to buy him a beer. Aside from that, this doesn't even seem probable...Am I alone here? Is this common place?

I was never picked on (never more than once, everyone gets tested) - I grew up on the mean streets of NYC; there, it was the quick and the dead.  Note that I'm still alive.

I also didn't know there were restrictions on subject matter here; mods should so inform. 

This topic was brought to mind by a recent trip to Calif, where I lived for a long time.  And met wtih two old friends, both addicted gamblers.  Both what would be called wimps. (And, as noted, I don't use the term pejoratively.)

 One with as good job, but still living in the same apartment for years with his Mex wife, a place that if a condo he couuld have bought 3 times over if the tracks and the books didn't have a  major part of the bread he earned over the past 3 decades. And the other sleeping in his car, working now and then as a security guard, running to Tijuana whenever he's a double saw ahead to bet horses)

Subject was on my mind. But I think I hit a raw nerve.  I wondered if there was any connection between wimpery and addicted gambling. Now, from the surprising neg reaction to this inncuous post, possibly, possibly . . .hmm

I mean, by now most here know that if they click my threads they're not going to get some monosyllabic piece of air. I'm not "wiiting for market" here.  When I write and don't get paid, I write what I want, for the exercise if nothing else.  Just as a professional vocalist sings to himself. And I post it here rather than any of the one milion other Net forums because I bet sports (football and college hoops, latter only in March)

Unlike most of the handicappers (mainly kids on humungous ego trips) on the football boards, I don't do the public cap for adulation. But writing out my reasoning aids me in the selection process - sometimes doing so obliges me to discard a pick I'd previously made.

Same thing here.  It's self-gratification (no, kids, not that kind - and btw what th fuk is it with all the porn; I mean, wha hoppin' to the Sexual Revolution? Unless you look like a cross between PeeWee Herman, Groucho Marx and the Three Stooges -and even if you do - go out to some bars, you;ll find a lady, or maybe a person, take whatever you can get, it'll be better than your hand. Or an older woman whose been around the block . . . try Mexico if all else fails).

Soon, after the foots season, I'm gone (and please, no cliches about the door not hitting my butt on the way out - dull and antique stuff there). I have a low boredom threshhold . . .

Those who see my username and prefer porn or polls ( I do 'em sometime, polls that is) just skip.  I don't think this site has an "ignore" button, but use your volition.

Tho stuff I've written for pay and publication is still on the Net (and one lit essay I pubbed 20 years ago has been on the Net for years and translated into virtually all major languages, incl Russian, Chinese and Japanese - and the fuks never paid me a cent for the re-publication, such is the thievery of the Net).

I do appreciate ALL comments, tho.  Gives me a insight into the American psyche - the great thing about the Net is that it allows the Common Man of American Myth a true voice, undeleted by editors trying to keep their print pub on some imagined "high level."

Even if that voice is limited to monosyllables and three word sentences.  Muffled and inarticulate, it's still Vox Populi.  Of course, reading and writing was taught to the masses by the new industrial elites that emerged in the 18th century, to better keep the books and tend the engines.  And the Populi are almost always more articulate in voice than in pen, or keyboard. (The next innovation has to be forums where contributors can speak their message, not write it ---- a kinder and gentler forum for the inarticulate masses.)

Altho I'm fond of Mencken's famous statement that "nobody ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American people," I really do not have contempt for the masses. They are the ones who (mistakenly) fight the wars our elites get us into, who slave to pay the taxes, who are the first to fight and first to starve . . . ... why Appalachia doesn't rise and burn down Wash DC is something I can't understand . . .

I actually really enjoy reading your posts- for the style, if not ( always) the content- 

I don't go around looking for fights, BE.  I much prefer to walk away. The incident i describe took place over 10 years ago - I was frontally challenged.  Running or even walking away was not an option. In that situation pacifism doesn't work - you fight (or be willing to) or have some part of you inside die.

You may be correct as to the percentage of wimps. Depends on how you define them.  My definition was very narrow, and of course human personality is much harder to pigeonhole than the tons of books, articles and "studies" that we're regaled with.

I don't think, tho, you can define homosexuals (I resent most what that "movement" did to a solid English word, destroying in the process many great old poems and songs) as being all wimps.  There are the Butches and the Fems, and all the others in between.  The general bitchiness of many of them, tho, is the opposite of wimpery, which generally likes to get along by going along, and fears standing out from the crowd.

No one can please everyone all the time, dsn.

I will confess that while I usually only click on posts that have a topic that interests me, regardless of the author, I will usually send the mouse after any you post. Ditto some of Be Easy, altho his bitter anti-gay comment will likely be reported to the Gay (ugh) and Lesbian Alliance - and the latter is reportedly headed by Dirty Dick's daughter, so BE, you may really be in deep shit .  Ever visit Afghanistan?  They need bright young 20 somethings there, to win the hearts and minds of those Taliban fukkers . . .

There are a few other bright lights here, as there are on all forums. But I don't want to take the easy road by putting down the monosyllabic folks, the formerly voiceless ones, the ones who have a need for  this stuff to express themselves. 

Because (at least in my fantasy) these former silent ones will one day rise as one, march like a locust swarm on Wash DC, hanging from trees and lampposts lobbyists,  neocons and radiocons as they go, and with torches ablaze surrounding that Parliament of person that perches on Capitol Hill.  We don't need Mo Atta, we can do it ourselves.

But if I were an advertiser, this is the sports bet site that I'd be willing to spend the most money to get my message on ----- chock full of the solid, spending demo group, the 18-35 year olds.

I have a theory about white bullies.   They have (to use a phony psychobabble term) "inadequecies".  They know they are cowards - for if they are as macho as they want to project, let them join an outlaw motorcycle club where they'll get all the fighting they want. Or go to the outskirts of the black ghetto on the weekend before the welfare checks come.

Whites in general in the USA have a lot of both bluff and wimpery in them.  If not, they wouldn't be run off into the mountains to hide, as has been happening for decades now.  And as far as the bigmouths who like to repeat ad nauseum that when the SHTF they wil come out firing one of their 50 firearms - hey, gimme one of those sarcatic smileys to paste here.

Like you, I've never gotten challenged in bars when by myself or with non-wimpy friends.  The point of the anecdote was that my wimp friend draws such people like flies - and btw, about 10 minutes later the drunken beard worked his way to the far side of my friend, who, to my disgust, bought him a beer.

The post we're talking about wasn't designed to appeal to anyone - but myself.

When i say i've written stuff that appealed to the masses, and to the demo group worshipped by advertisers - I meant past tense, ancient history

After dropping out of college (from boredom)  I decided to get into advertising - most of the top agencies were in NYC, where i grew up.  I had read in an advertising trade journal that a certain well-known brand of men's shirt had canned the major agency that they were with and were looking for another with fresh ideas.

(Tip for the young college grads looking for work: don't mass email your resume, they're automaitically deleted before being read, Instead, read up intensely on the industy you want to break into, the trade mags, the websites etc. Look for a wedge, and be creative. Don't just send an email resume - put it in print, and old-fashioned letter addressed to the company CEO or prez, vice prez, down the line,  with spefic ideas as to how YOUR approach and ideas can help THAT particular company.)

I approached a mid-level agency with an idea as to a print ad campaign that I thought would grab the suits of the shirt company. To shorten the story, I got the job, and was an instant jr exec. My 3 semesters of higher ed didn't deter them - I sewed the shirt, so to speak, to fit the suits who would wear it.

Later, I did the TV ad campaign for a NYC racetrack - which experience later led me to work in CR and Promotions for a West Coast track. A varied resume -- but as i said, i have a low boredom threshhold.  I work on retainer now, in RE management. but have a lot of time to myself, with brief interludes of frenzied insanity

But no, the post was not meant to appeal to anyone in particular here - if I was interested in that kind of contest I'd just put another virus scan onto my machine and search the porn sites for some acceptable softcore and post it here - instant 2000 looks.

something doesn't add up here,,,,,you now work in RE management, so you should be familiar with Calif housing, and yet you sound critical of your friend for renting, when in fact renting in Calif has been a smarter economic decision then owning for years

luckbythetruck:  I enjoyed reading your post and agree with most of it.  I disagree with the percentage of gay men that might be wimps but it is not a big deal.  I had a friend that rolled gays back when he was in the service.  One night he tried to do this, the man said, "now there are two things I really like to do and one is to you-know-what and the other is to FIGHT" and the guy promptly beat the crap out of him.  Of course, it does not matter, I have no reason to argue.  Your main premise is true, I believe.  Never mind the naysayers.  Some of them would be upset if you said something about the Pantywaist President (as the papers in London call him).

I have read all of your responses. You seem to be an individual not happy with people in power. It doesn't matter if it's the guy beating somebody's ass in a bar, or a politician , or the hostess that says you have to wait an hour to sit down___you just despise these people.
