Let him make the choice. If he is going to quit do it early it doesn't look as bad for him. I hope he sticks it out.

Epilogue -- My son blew off the first day of practice. The coach called our house to say that he'd really like my son on the team. I made my son talk to the coach, and the coach told my son that he'd love to have him back.
Well, my son went to practice the last two days, and he seems thrilled to be back. I give the coach the credit....now I get to watch my son in 20 varsity and JV games, and he'll get life lessons and memories for a lifetime. It's amazing that it took a call from the coach to wake my son up....
