    Poll Results

    Thank you for voting.

What do you think of Omar Bin Laden's criticism of the U.S.'s killing of his father?

He has a point, it WAS an execution without a trial. 13% He's got some nerve! His father was responsible for the death of thousands. 47% Who cares what that jerk thinks? 40%

He can eat a big ol' dick as far as I am concerned.

"Next, he wants to know "why an unarmed man was not arrested and tried in a court of law so that truth is revealed to the people of the world.""

I'd like to know why 3,000+ innocent civilians were not given an opportunity to plead for why they shouldn't be summarily executed in a court of law. The examples of Milosevic and Saddam are not relevant as both of them were actual heads of state whereas bin Laden was the head of a non-state terrorist entity.

i agree with ya.....BUT i find it odd US would kill an unarmed man, that's so un-American.  If i was charged with something, id like a fair trial...we are innocent until proven guilty...or is that not the case anymore?

The right to trial by jury (and the presumption of innocence) is a right that is afforded to citizens of the US, Pokin -- OBL is obviously not within that category. Besides, if we captured him alive, he'd obviously end up in Guantanamo (where else would we put him?) and then you have to ask do we really want to put him there so he can motivate all of his followers?

You're somewhat comparing apples to oranges in saying "this is what I expect my rights to be as a US citizen" versus "this is what should have been afforded to OBL" -- make sense?

i completely agree with your statement.....at the same time its a humane thing im trying to convey. how are we so quick to judge and prosecute?

do you know there are so many innocent people the govt puts in jail for something they did not do? whether its OBL or joe shmoe everyone deserves to prove their innocence.

I do understand what you are saying, Pokin -- the ability to be humane is what has long distinguished the US from our foes traditionally (one can argue whether it still applies currently, but that's another conversation for another day.)

We are so quick to judge and prosecute here because this is somewhat of a special case. It's not like OBL was some no-name terrorist who we just happened to come upon. We've been hunting this dude for more than 10 years (basically since the USS Cole bombing).

I do know there are many innocent people that get put in jail. There was a pretty active Innocence Project at my law school and I had some friends who volunteered with them, so I am well aware of what goes on in that sense.

OBL and Joe Shmoe should not get the same rights if you ask me. I believe we can amicably disagree with that. There would be so, so many problems with giving OBL a criminal trial that the burdens outweighed the benefits IMO

I do understand what you are saying, Pokin -- the ability to be humane is what has long distinguished the US from our foes traditionally (one can argue whether it still applies currently, but that's another conversation for another day.)

Yes but the problem with that self-defeating mindset Pokin is if you take it to its logical conclusion, then I guess the US just sits back and takes whatever some terrorist group dishes out to us because "fighting back will only cause more violence and retribution." I mean its somewhat a side effect of asymmetrical warfare in a sense. Nevertheless, the people who are jihadists and follow OBL and his warped teaching of Islam do not understand reason. They do not understand compromise. They understand one language and one language only (sadly): force. Killing OBL will probably greatly disrupt their operations and that could actually end up saving innocent lives

ever wonder why the USS Cole was attacked in the first place? i mean what did the US govt do to warrant an attacked from ragheads?? why would anyone attack a country who supposedly does nothing but good in the world?

I'm well aware of Al Qaeda's "rationale" for their attacks upon the US and US interests, even before 9/11. To be honest, I feel like any American who is not aware of it and/or has never read about OBL's motivations is doing our country a great disservice. With the information we have at our fingertips, no one has a legitimate reason to not know this type of stuff if you ask me.

bin laden and his people are the devil for killing thousands of innocent americans and others who did nothing to him.  bush and the americans are the devil for killing thousands of innocent iraqi's, including who knows how many children, and others who did nothing to us.  it's all relative.

that being said, what is the argument for not killing bin laden when given the chance?

Ya can't.  But how can you dismiss it as outright B.S. with little information to back that up.

It's like everything.  You use what you know and what you see....throw in a little logic.....and make your best guess.

To just summarily dismiss what they say is just as bad as believing every word they say.

Hey Kap....i take it you're experienced in law....

do you think the people (not the govt) have enough evidence to prosecute and execute OBL?

my take is, this smells like a mob hit. OBL working with the CIA/Mossad and got whacked before OBL could drop dime on his co-defendants.

Often in between....that's the rub.  I have been dead wrong on many things I'm sure.  But I think I am closer to the "truth" in what I believe if I take everything and evaluate it on its own merits as opposed to just flat picking a side.  Part of the reason I voted half democrat and half republican last election.
