The trip to the field goal range could be coincidental but if you are in scoring range, you try to go for the score, even if you are down by kazillion.
To not allowing the kicker to kick that fg would be like a coach who refuses to play a guy because he has a disability. Sportsmanlike conduct agrees with the fg attempt even if you lose by a ton. Every individual stats do count.
