    Cue the pitchforks and torches.

The alumni will call for Ash's head if they lose. Write it down now.

Why? Losing to Texas State will ensure a season of unmitigated, painful, indigestion inducing disaster and worse, no progress under Ash. Not progression. Regression. In a major way...

That is why this spot is a must win for Rutgers. They absolutely MUST win all the 'winnable' games in Sept and October because the toughest slate in the country comes on the back end :

    @ Wisky
    Michigan
    Penn State
    @ MSU

Throw in Ohio State in the second game just for good measure and yet another loss.

Lose this game and you are 0-2 for certain, then @ Kansas, Buffalo and Indiana. Rutgers always has the potential to let things spiral out of control and go 0-5 or 1-4 and then they head into the meat grinder of the schedule. Lucky them. Never underestimate their incompetence.

On top of this, Rutgers had 8 defensive players dismissed due to a credit card fraud scandal.

The very thing that got Flood fired (arrests, scandal), is now haunting Ash. And he was brought in as the Mr. Clean to right the wrongs of the program under Flood, both on and off the field. And here he stands...with scandal.

That leviathan that is back end of the schedule, the scandal, the lack of progress the first two years under Ash, the 138-0 beatings by OSU and Michigan as a black stain on the program heightens the urgency to not only win games like this, but pour it and and continue to pour it on even after "Mercy!" is screamed to the heavens by your opponent.

So will they win? You ACTUALLY have to ask IF they will win. I believe they will. They have to.

Now will they cover? I believe they will. They have to provide SOMETHING to the fans and alumni to inspire them that there is hope, there is a future for this team and that Ash was not an abomination of a hire.

Does Ash know all this? Your damn right he does and he has to release the hounds on Texas State (a team with weapons that can put points up but has an unconscionably bad D which is our saving grace).

I was waiting for Ash to announce his starting QB before posting this and was praying it was NOT Gio Rescigno. He plays like his cleats have concrete in them. It's true freshman Art Sitkowski and despite his inexperience and the inexperience of this team, Rutgers should have enough here to score and continue to score throughout 4 quarters. If it was Gio, this was a no play. Art was a godsend.

Included in all this that Vegas adjust this line a mere half point after all the suspensions came down: an indicator that they believe this team still has the same ability to blow out Texas State here.

Finally RU has a history of pouring it on these FCS teams (Texas State effectively is one):

    2017 Morgan State 65-0
    2016 Howard 52-14
    2015 Norfolk State 63-13
    2014 Howard 38-25
    2013 Norfolk State 38-0

In contrast Texas State at -16 is a bargain as those lines were -40, -36, -35, -42 and -41 with AWFUL RU teams. So again Texas State is not an FCS team but masquerades as one at times. There's a difference there, but RU has no other options here. Win by blowout or let the rumblings start. Lose the game and it's off with Ash's head...

Did they pay $1.2 million to a team like Texas State to lose....No way. They can. But they won't on Saturday. Lay the points.

It’s a bargain basement line too.

They absolutely need the drill them and drill them hard. This isn’t Rice vs Paris View. This is a Big Ten team which still in the smallest ways possible legitimize itself in a conference they should have never joined. And if you can’t beat a fringe FBS team, call Elon Musk to strap rocket boosters to your as* and fly you as far away from the B1G Ten as possible.

My capping focus is on sides only.

I am not attracted to, nor do I pay attention to over unders in individual games. Those are more system plays and can be beat (which is why Vegas limits bets on them more than sides).

Just not my cup of tea...

Good luck Scal, I spotted this one up the same way, pretty much same reasoning. T-State is going to be one of the worst teams, they can't handle P-5 and while Rutgers is toward the P-5 bottom they're not a mess of injuries in game 1. I like this one, glad to see some others looking close at it, seeing the same thing I am.

One other I found similar to this is UK / CMU - CMU near the bottom, UK a little mysterious at QB but sounds like a decent battle going on, not as worried who they go with.... UK does sound like they have a real quality roster albeit toward the bottom of the SEC. Should handle CMU very easily... just don't see how CMU stays within 17.

Also, UK with UF the following week, no doubt you need some confidence going into that one. I think UK lays it on here and have the personnel to do it.

    -Good Luck.

I can’t wait to see the UK-UF line after 31 straight losses.

5 Dimes surprisingly didn’t have it.

Hey if they win that game note following week they'll face Drew Anderson of Buffalo fame LY who is now on Murray State. Might be worth a peek to see if those boys can hang with a severely hungover UK team.

    Good luck

I think UK will have a very tough time winning given the incredible scare they gave UF last year. But the spread is worth a look!

Another nuanced point about Game 1: Rutgers has had to open against the Huskies (an automatic loss) the past two years. Texas State is a welcome doormat in comparison:

    From my local paper:

Well, here's a welcome change. After back-to-back years opening with Pac-12 power Washington, the Scarlet Knights get an easy one. Texas State was awful last season, going 2-10 and losing its finale by 53 points to Troy State. This is part of why it makes sense to start true freshman Artur Sitkowski right away -- give him a confidence builder against a team that ranked 102nd in total defense last fall. RUTGERS 38, TEXAS STATE 14.

    More from my local:

Isaih Pacheco emerges as the team's featured running back. Rutgers hasn't had a truly dominant running back in several years, but Pacheco has impressed anyone who has watched practice this summer with his combination of power and quickness. Again, it is a lot to ask a true freshman to come in and take over right away, but before the end of the season, it'll be clear that he's top dog in the offensive backfield.

Raheem Blackshear is the team's leading receiver. A running back as the top pass catcher? Don't be surprised. Brian Leonard is still No. 2 all-time in program history, and the offensive play caller smart enough to get the ball in his hands in the passing game later in his career is back with the team now. John McNulty knows this team lacks experience and depth at wide receiver, so look for him to find other weapons. Blackshear is one of the program's most explosive players.

    Scal, you're back?

I was looking for you like a few months back and someone responded saying you lost a bet to someone, and said you would never be back?!

    How's it going man?

Before you curse me out, what are your top three college football picks for this weekend?

Looking forward to hearing back from you, and happy that you're back in spite of losing the bet..

    RUTGERS -16 over Texas State

Scal, good to see you posting.  FWIW, I came up with a line of -20 using my baseline #s (no adjustments).  If I was forced to pick a side here I would take Rutgers for many of the reasons you gave above.  Although I will not be playing this game, I would like to see the current staff do well (Jay Niemann is a family friend from my Dad's coaching stops over the years).

I bolded a couple items in your original post that I somewhat disagree on.  The first offense / defense comment about Texas State is actually the opposite of what comes to mind when I think of what Withers is trying to do there.  I think their defense is slightly better than their offense (relatively speaking); at least the run defense is much improved (the pass D still sucks, I'll give you that).  Losing Jordan Mittie as a grad transfer to KSU could hurt.

The last time I saw Withers up close and personal as a DC he was hard headed and insistent to run his complicated NFL schemes with less talented players than most teams in that league and it was a disaster.  But, I think he's learned his lesson over the years that at the college level, you have to adjust to the players abilities, what they can understand, and do well.  But hey, at least his wife gave us the recipe for that great Texas caviar salsa.

The second bolded section is regarding the FCS comparison.  Yes, its very fair to compare Texas State to some FCS schools (hell, they were a lower level team themselves for much of the program's existence).  But, to put them in the same category as bad MEAC schools (a bad league) is not correct.  There are a wide range of teams in the FCS level and Texas State is not comparable to these MEAC schools.  There's a reason the line is different (-20ish for Texas State vs. -40 for those MEAC schools).  Texas State's run defense was reasonable enough to keep them in an early season non-conf game vs. Colorado for the 1st half last year.  No chance that these MEAC schools could do that, for example.  I think the Rutgers game this year will be similar to the Colorado game last year.  Rutgers will pull away in the 2nd half after they wear them out.  And the Rutgers staff should let Sitkowski throw the ball early and often to loosen up the run D I would hope.

Best of luck on your play!    And I hope you don't mind a little construction criticism on a couple points within your write-up.  At the end of the day, I still would lean Rutgers.  Good stuff Scal, thanks for posting.

    Fair points TD.

I don’t want to misconstrue the MEAC FCS lines with the -16 as there should be a HUGE gap (just not that huge, and if that gap is even 2 points off, there is value as you noted). It was more about Rutgers straying strong against weak completion, albeit Texas State is not in the same category.

Thanks for the time, effort, and insight you provide Scal! Looking forward to a great season. On board with the play and season totals.

Let's have a hell of a football season! Let me know if you have any questions or insight on the WVU mountaineers. I know just about everything about the team.

Reminds me of when I visited a great uncle of mine in the hospital before he passed away...we talked betting all the time, and he was a big boxing bettor..his quote was, 'I used to know every time those guys would take a garbage' ??????

They edited out sh*t for "garbage"...can't ruin that quote.

At the funeral home, I had the front desk people at the funeral home print out that days odds, and I placed it in his casket before the funeral service.
