Here's my take... just random thoughts rolling around in my brain.
With the entrance of the Crown tournament, the NIT has adjusted its selection process a bit. We now have "exempt bids". From the top twelve conferences, an exempt bid is given to the highest rated team that does not receive a bid to the NCAA tournament.
Why does this matter to Wichita State and UAB? Looking at the American; we have Memphis, then North Texas... then Florida Atlantic, not far behind is UAB. A bit further is then Wichita State.
Let's say North Texas upsets Memphis and wins the AAC post-season tournament. Memphis gets an at-large bid. Then that third highest rated team gets the exempt NIT bid. Currently that would likely be Florida Atlantic. But UAB could overtake them. And I don't think it impossible that Wichita State might have a long shot at overtaking that third spot. But they will likely need to run the table: including tonight's game with UAB, and the following road game at North Texas.
Just one of the "what-ifs" we get to play this time of year! BOL to everyone!
Note: The NIT has a method to determine which team is rated higher, it's basically a combination of other rating systems.
