First of all I would like to say that Mayweather is an obviously very talented boxer who has tremendous speed of hand and foot and is probably the best 147 pound fighter in the world. That I'm sure is no surprise to anyone who follows the boxing game. But having said that I think floyd has lost some of his luster because of the way he chose to handle his career. He has been very selective in picking opponents and has always made sure that his style would complement the much slower boxers he decided to fight. A perfect example would be his match-up with Arturo Gatti. He knew that his hand-speed would be impossible for the slower Gatti to contend with. The result is he looks fantastic in a fight he had every possible advantage in. His only real test besides Castillo was Chico Corrales. He looked great in that fight because Corrales abandoned his jab and came into Floyd range face first. The outcome was predictable after the first round of combat. Now how about Zab Judah? Anyone could argue that he has tremendous speed and can really punch. But Mayweather had observed that Zab had become a 4 round fighter and knew he would tire and slow down. He was right but how come he couldn't take out an exhausted Zab in the final rounds? See Floyd hates to be hit and consequently takes no chances. So thats why I believe a real pressure fighter can give him fits. Castillo is a pressure fighter but was too slow to be totally effective against the quicker Mayweather.
Now Let's look at Oscar DeLaHoya. Say what you want about him but you have to admit he fights all comers and ducks no one. I just think he possesses the perfect fighting style to test Floyd like he's never been tested before. He can pressure you but also has the hand speed and defense that a Castillo didn't. Another factor that I think plays into his favor is his powerful and steady jab. This jab can neutralize a lot of the speed advantage that Floyd might try to utilize against a lesser adversary. Floyd; as great a boxer as he is rarely uses his legs. He prefers to sit in the pockets and slip with his head and shoulders to make you miss. Then he loves to counter off a slow fighters mistakes. I do not see this strategy working against Oscar. DeLaHoya figures to hit Floyds arms and shoulders and wear him out in the process. I could go on and on but surfice to say that I bet a huge amount on Oscar and am very confident in my bet. Oscar legacy depends on a big effort. His pride will not allow him to be remembered for what some perceived as quitting against Hopkins. The crowd will be 80% DeLaHoya and in a BIG FIGHT this can not be underestimated. Most Great Upsets happen on a team or fighters home court. I see Mayweather taking the early rounds but starting with the 5th I foresee it being all DeLaHoya. If Floyd doesn't go into suvivor mode I would not be shocked to see the Late Round Stoppage for the Golden One. Not trying to change anyones minds. If you think I'm dead wrong stick with your own opinion and may the best man win.
