Got into this discussion the other night at the watering hole. It was a very ignorant discussion because none of us really knew crap about boxing. One guy was adamant it was Mayweather, I went with Jermain Taylor.
What do you guys who actually know the sport think?

Taylor was tested twice by Hopkins and once by Winky in very, very close fights some reputable people had going the other way. PBF was never really tested, although he had a close call against Castillo. The way PBF destroyed Judah separates him, IMO.

1) Floyd Mayweather (The best in the game today; had great resume at 130 and 135, but since moving up to 140 & 147 he has not fought the best, still #1 though until proven otherwise) 2) Manny Pacquiao (The Mexican assassin needs no explanation) 3) Winky Wright (Had a draw with Taylor, but his 2 wins over Mosley and domination of Tito separate him from him) 4) Rafael Marquez (Since 2000 he has been the model of consistency; elite wins over Austin, Johnson, & Vasquez) 5) Jermain Taylor (Has made a career of beating up smaller men coming up. His 2 wins, although controversial, over Hopkins lands him here)
You could never list Taylor #1 with any sound reasoning.
My P4P top 5:

I have to tab FMayJr. as #1. But "Pac-Man" has narrowed this gap, as FMayJr. has not improved any in his last 1 or 2 bouts. Then it's a bit less clear. Marquez, maybe Calderon, Vic.Dar' is somewhere in the mix. As are Cotto, Wright, Miranda. Calzaghe, & Kessler are in there as well & get bonus pts. for being perfect. I'm willing to throw Dawson & Wlad in the very bottom as well.

bigeiii - I agree with all the names on your list, with the exception of Cotto. Who has Cotto fought? Yes, he dishes out some of the best body-work I have ever seen, but...I just don't know. Look at Mayweather...the dude has fought some of the best fighters in the world, and handled all of them with relative ease. Cotto needs to beef up his resume a bit.
I'm definitely with you on your #1 choice. Mayweather gets my vote for the lb4lb crown.

Mayweather ..there is no question about that. Honestly as a boxing fan I am surprised that Pacquaio keeps winning. HE has the worse technique but hey it gets the job done. He will get stopped or embarrased soon enough....possibly by juan marquez. But Pacquaio combination of speed/power/stamina allows him to fight as sloppy as he wants.

Would flip Pacman and Wright. Starting to appreciate Diaz a little aswell.

As much as I dislike Hopkins, I agree with you there. Hall of Famer, no doubt about it.
I use to dislike hopkins but I started to appreciate him as a boxer. He doesn't have the must natural abilities and uses what he has to the MAX potential. Yes his fights are "boring" but he protects himself while scoring points. beating winky would mean alot to b-hop's career but I can easily see a DRAW in this fight

It all sounded good until you mentioned Zab Judah. Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Judah lost to every fighter that was decent? Heck, Tszyu destroyed Judah worse than PBF did.
