They are doing a documentary about the Luis Resto- Billy Collins fight. If you remember, or if you are as old as me they fought, I think on the undercard of Duran-Moore, and Panama Lewis removed padding from Restos glove and he delivered a brutal beating to Collins. His face was swelled up ridiculously. I think Collins life spiraled out of control after that and he died, not sure if it was suicide or an accident...
I never saw the fight but this should probably be a good documentary , like most of the HBO ones

I have a good memory ...it was the undercard of Duran-Moore
I didnt know this part of it..found on boxrec.com
Originally, Resto won a unanimous decision. The New York State Athletic
Commission (NYSAC) ordered the result changed to "No Contest" following
charges that Resto's gloves had been illegally tampered with before the
bout by Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis. As a result of this bout, in
October 1986, Resto was convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal
possession of a deadly weapon (his fists). He served 21/2 years of a
three-year sentence. Both he and Lewis were banned from boxing for
life.

Panama Lewis is as crooked as they come, remember he was behind the mysterious black bottle in Pryor-Arguello also. This will be a good documentary in typical HBO fashion.

I was at this fight. Panama Lewis should have been tried for manslaughter. That way he would have had to serve more then 6 years in jail. This vicious crook actually had the nerve to return to the boxing game after this incident.

Resto was so full of shit, first he knew nothing, then in the corner he figured it outm then he knew from the beginning. !st he felt bad about it, then he wanted to destroy him.
I dont blame Collins father for not wanting to see him. Collins ex-wife kind of forgave him or said to move on. That was impressive. I would not have done the same
They should put Resto and Lewis in a ring and puts casts on their hands and have them go at it
Good info on what was in the bottles
Good job by this guy, obviously focused on Resto the whole time.
I found it sad that both of Restos kids were older than what Billy Collins was when he died. That fight just destroyed him and everything

The blame is 90% more on Lewis. Resto knew his career was in trouble & wanted to continue to make a living as a boxer. This was his whole life & all he knew how to do, He never thought it might lead to Collin's death I AM NOT justifying his part in this affair but he was just a pawn in Lewis's maniacal plot. Panama Lewis is the embodiment of EVIL & this world will be a better place when he finally leaves it. All boxing fans should demand that he be barred from training any pro fighter in this Country. The NY State Commission was negligent, because a fighter's wraps should be checked my a commission official before he enters the ring. It should then be initialed as a sign that it has been approved. This was not done before the Collin's Resto match.

Just saw the Documentary today. I agree with Redlad.
Not saying Resto was innocent but he was fighting for money and trusting his trainers. He had no idea the fight would lead to what happened. Panama knew what he was doing and the consequences. He should have never been allowed near boxing again, like Pete Rose.
Before the show even got into betting I turned and said to my brother, "I guarantee there was a ton of money on the fight and Panama had a hand in it."

Just watched it and Resto is as guilty as all of the other scumbags in his corner. As soon as they put the plaster on his fists, he bought into the deal.
I'm shocked too that they threw out the case. Great documentary & just solidifies what a dirty business boxing was/is.....
