Evidence:  At El Paso (PPV): Evander Holyfield vs. Lou Savarese, 10 rounds, heavyweights

OK, who here is going to shell out money to watch this?  This is like putting Royce Gracie v. Dan Severn on PPV.  How does this sport expect to maintain its fan base with this garbage?

Of course not, all of these On-Demand PPV's do around 40K-50K and are priced at 24.95 or 29.99.

The bottom-line is Holy still has a fan base, but none of the major networks want to pick up his fights so there is no choice.

It's actually not much different then the MMA PPV last week with Kimbo vs Mercer, really a sideshow.

I think that the UFC just does some great marketing.  For example - when was the last time a major UFC title fight was on regular TV?  Every single one of their "major" fights are on PPV.  I can't watch Rampage or Lidell fight unless I shell out 49.95.

I agree that putting Holyfield on PPV is a joke, but the only reason they did that is because HBO and Showtime didn't want the fight.  So in a backwards way, it was actually helping the sport.

IF SHO and HBO did not want the fight, that is a completely different situation.  But, it would seem FSN or ESPN might have taken it, no?

I am the biggest Holyfield fan I know.  Turned down $9K per ringside seat I had for Lewis-Holy I (regret that everyday of my life now).  So, I really paid $18K to watch him fight Lewis and I will not pay $25 to watch this.  What does that tell you?

alwayswin - You're right, but you know how the promoters for boxing are.  If they think they can make a buck off of PPV, they'll do it.  Not saying it's right, just how it is.

I think the UFC is doing a lot of great things for their sport.  Their matchups are great, they give the public what they want to see.  But you have to remember, they have the advantage of it being a newer phenomenon.  Boxing, however, has the problem of there being so many fights, and figuring out a way to divide them up on free TV and PPV.

Again, though, I'll agree with you on some of these fights.  Wright/Hopkins is going to be on PPV, and that fight will suck.  But Taylor/Pavlik is going to be on HBO, and that should be a war.  HBO has been trying hard to accomodate the boxing fan this year, and are doing an admirable job, in my opinion.

alwayswin - You're right, but you know how the promoters for boxing are.

I have no problem paying for the right fights.  But wasn't Shannon Briggs just on PPV too?  Boxing must provide these marginal title fights for free or it risks being gobbled up by the UFC.

Another thought...MMA might be the best thing ever for boxing fans.  Boxing finally has a quasi-competition.  Boxing will need to re-invent itself to compete with the young bull.  If it can't, it risks being displaced by MMA and becoming a stepchild.

Not really sure if MMA in general is a challenge, but the UFC is.  Shows like IFL Battleground are a debacle.  Even Pride finally was bought by the UFC.

I still maintain that the UFC is absolutely at the height of its popularity right now.  If the UFC has a couple of PPV matchups that are letdowns, they'll have to retool their thinking.  That's what happened with boxing.  They had a number of shows that were letdowns, and the buys went down, forcing them to put many more fights on regular HBO or Showtime.  You're right - Shannon Briggs was just on PPV, but I think that was another example of not being able to hammer out a deal with one of the networks.  Many people don't realize that DeLa Hoya puts a lot of his lesser-known and up and coming fighters on PPV.  There's a built-in audience there, but the names aren't big enough to put on HBO, so he uses another outlet.

Personally, I will never buy a UFC PPV.  Not many of the fights go past one or two rounds, and to me, there's not enough bang for my buck.  I won't criticize it, but I'm much more of a boxing fan.

Agree completlty the PPV thing is out of control ESPN or FSN would have been fine, Zab fought there, seen rahman i think. no on in there right mind pays for this, I d pay 10 bucks to see kimbo again before paying here. Side note anyone think Lou can win, at +1500 for a KO was considering a small bet.

They are setting Holyfield up for a title shot.  I had him losing to Oquendo but they judges gave it to him.  Lou is a sacrifical lamb, but since they will never him the decision, his only shot is a KO, but I think Holyfield pulls this off.  Savarese was never a top heavyweight, and his prime was 14 years ago.

But, at 15-1, why not?  I wouldn't put more than $100 on it though.

Sooooo misguided....  i don't give a flying fuck what these boxers make frankly is has nothing to do with the quality the fights when you are comparing the sports. Lots of ppl say college basketball and football are better then their respective pro sports, so your theory of just because they make more $$ makes them better is about the fucking most idiotic thing i've heard. WTF does it matter what PBF bets on a Nuggets game... are you really that stupid?

BTW how many fat fucks in boxing were title holders at one point??... quick answer, lots. So are they all sideshows as well? Also i never compared the athletic abilities of the mma athletes to the boxers.... i was comparing the entertainment value between the two..simpleton.

Nice article  .... did a 8th grader write that 200 word in depth piece?
