When will sports betting be legal in Texas?

Unfortunately, the future of legalized traditional online sports betting in Texas remains unclear. Texas has historically not been considered a strong candidate for legalizing sports betting due to the state's strong conservative values. Every measure to establish a legalized market put forth since 2018 has failed to gain traction in the state's legislature. 

You cannot put the entire blame on Republican Gov. Gregg Abbot, though. In February 2025, he was quoted as saying he was open to “letting the voters decide” on the future of sports betting in the Lone Star State. While not quite a watershed moment, it certainly represents progress for the pro-sports betting lobby in Texas.  

Legalizing sports betting in Texas would require a constitutional amendment, as well as a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature. In Texas, the legislature only convenes during odd-numbered years, so the earliest possible date for legal sports betting would be 2027.
