Does ANYONE here think this is Okay? Assets do not count towards getting assistance! This is extreme but hardly RARE!!!!! Should people with homes and 100K+ in the bank be eligible for food stamps?....
Amanda
Clayton, a 24-year-old from Lincoln Park, Michigan, won $1 million from
the Michigan state lottery… But she's still collecting $200 a month in
food stamps… "I thought that they would cut me off, but since they
didn't, I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton
said. She did, however, find money to buy a new house and car…
When a local TV interviewer in Detroit asked Clayton if she thought she
had a right to the public assistance, she responded, "I feel that it's
OK because, I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay… I have two
houses."

should people with $100k in the bank be eligible for unemployment? My buddy made a comment to me earlier regarding this article. I think she is the one who got screwed not the taxpayer. First, she hits a MILLION dollar ticket but because she took the cash option her prize is $700k, a 300k loss but the front of the ticket it probably states you win a million bucks (I'm talking scratch ticket).
So her payout will be 700k - 250k (taxes) = $450k........meaning essentially she paid $550k in taxes. Who's the real crook here? The STATE of Michigan. So for this calendar year she is taxed $550k and is getting $2,400 in return!! People can whine all they want but blame the ineptness of the Michigan lawmakers for allowing this to happen. Yet those same exact lawmakers will defend their 10% raises and outlandish pensions.

She took the cash option, and was taxed on the rest. She says she was left with a little more than half of a million.
I watched a video with a local news station watching her move into one of two homes she paid cash for. The house I seen was very modest. How much cash does she have now ? And yes,she does have bills. She has to eat...SO, WTF is she doing takin' that whoppin' $ 200 food card.
How is her having two homes, yes two,and some cash in the bank, going to change her ability to become employed...until then I guess she's going to be using those winnings to pay her bills.
You don't much like when people who haven't won $ need assistance to pay their RENT ! She's making what looks to be a sound investment by purchasing herself a place to live.
$200 food card - I feel this is paltry in proportion to her actual situation. And she legally qualifies. Those that don't qualify shouldn't be bashing the recipient.

According to DHS Director Maura Corrigan ...Amanda Clayton is "now no longer receiving benefits."
Legislation pending in the state Senate could cut off windfall lottery winners from tapping the social welfare system.
House Bill 5032 would require the Michigan Lottery to forward names of any resident who wins over $1,000 to the Michigan Department of Human Services to be cross referenced with public assistance roles...
"I'm not saying it's the right thing to do," Euline Clayton said of her daughter's use of food stamps. "But it's nobody's business if she's not breaking the law."
