1. Rewards people that have a good work ethic and lots of ambition.
2. Doesn't reward people that are lazy and have no ambition. Oh..what they are rewarded.
3. Doesn't reward lazy public union members with unsustainable wages and benefits for jobs where there is no requirement for proficiency. Oh wait, they are rewarded too.
For those that are public workers and do a good job

1. Do you consider "rewarded" to meaning getting barely enough to scratch by in poverty? I do not.
2. Are all public union workers lazy and overpaid? Are all public/private non-union workers super-workers and properly paid?
You paint with a very wide brush bowlslit.
Any employee that has a supervisor that is overwatch by a supervisor that has the ability to fire them quickly is a super-worker. Anyone that doesn't have incentives to perform and be proficient...not so much.
The greatness of our country was during the 'Grapes of Wrath' times when people had to be creative to get by. Our country's greatness is vastly dwarfed in comparison.

Seriously?
Grapes of Wrath times? You mean the ones when black people were still being lynched and women had no rights? The one where people who didnt have a job had to live in tents?
Maybe we are thinking of different books, I seem to recall that time being one of high impoverishment, low on rights to the majority of people (women and ethnic minorities) and similar as to who had more and who had less..and the lives each group were able to lead.
Why would you make claims like that about union workers vs public service workers? That is just flat out wrong and highly biased.

A few weeks back I took my kids up to my uncles cabin in Wyoming...about 5 hours away from where I live. He's about 73 years old now.
He has spent the last 20 years adding to the cabin...which is a good 2 hour dirt road drive after the pavement ends...trust me..its way back in BFE.
Over his early working years he was in the Army and worked all over in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. In his late 30's he started a business making custom trailers in a shop that he built behind his house in Oklahoma City.
Eventually that business dried up and he started a small company that built custom Canopy's for convenient stores....that business has done well over the last 30+ years and he has since retired and handed the business over to my cousin and her husband.
Building the canopies is very labor intensive and so he paid pretty well to compensate for the tough work. There is a great deal of travel that goes with the job because they build canopies all over the country.
When I visited him we talked about alot of things around the campfire. One of the things that kinda shocked me is that although he has had alot of good employees...he said he had to hire 10 white guys to find one good solid worker. He said the ratio is 3 to one for hispanic workers.
I don't intend for this to be racial at all but I'm just trying to make a point. Although I have a few african american friends from college and whatnot there really aren't alot here to even have a good statistic.
I happen to be caucasion and was surprised to see that the white guys ratio was so high. The more I thought about it the more sense it made. We have become a very lazy society for the most part and its getting worse not better.

I'm not talking about peoples rights and all that I'm talking about human ingenuity. Talking about people having little handouts to fall back on. People had to work for everything they got..thus they appreciated it more.
When the country's highways and dams and infrastructure was built. Machines were combersome and inefficient.
Surely it would have been better if everyone had equal rights but thats not what I'm talking about.
Nowadays, I see ambulance chaser commercials all day long. XBOX and PS3 rule our kids lives. Our greatness is certainly not now or in the last 20 years.

Great post! Let's get the kids back in the coal mines and the blacks back out in the fields. No more workers rights.
Surely it is the honest working man that is responsible for the situation we are in today. Once we get these uppity unions under control then we'll be okay, right?
That is a lovely story about your uncle, good to see you extrapolated that into an opinion about the entire country as a whole.
This one took the bait hook line and sinker
Don't worry, others probably did too and will come to your defense shortly.

So you think Americas laziness is at its all time low?

Because union workers have less incentive to actually 'earn their keep' MUCH LESS
There are always exceptions to the rule on both sides.
seriously are you insane? You think because a person is in a union that somehow means they dont have to work anymore. Really posts like this are comical and clearly show you are out of touch with reality. Also to sit here and say non union workers are better then union workers is funny as hell. Being in a union or not in a union doesnt make a good worker. Either you are a good worker or your not. I have worker around lousy union workers and i have also worked around lousy non union workers. And yes there are stories about a union worker doing this this or doing that, but for the most part union workers are good decent workers. I worked as a union firefighter and if you think i wanted to work around lazy co workers, that didnt do anything your insane. If you think any of us wanted some lazy worker to sit on his ass while the rest of us did the work you are insane. In my 25 years on the job, i seen many lose their jobs for various reasons, including being awful workers, so this mindset that because you are in a union, means you dont have to work anymore and can just sit home and collect a check is pure bullshit. Just more stories that big business love to make people believe about unions. If our captains and chiefs found out there were slackers they would be all over these guys, just like all of us co workers would be. performing a job, doesnt have anything to do with union or no union.
But hey if bashing unions for everything makes you sleep better at night, please continue.

bowl - As I see it, the whole point of your thread, the grapes of wrath reference etc, was to point out that America's greatness was created during a time when people believed in hard work, ambition, self reliance and self determination. The 3 previous posters can't comprehend that concept.
Instead they nit pick your example instead of understanding the overall concept and discussing that.
Wall believes in redistribution through taxation. Take more money away from the evil rich people and give it to the poor, after all those rich greedy bastards stole it from the poor through low wages and charging too much for their stuff and shipping jobs overseas to slash wages even more.
Skil - He is just baiting you.
cd - He will fight anyone that trashes unions even though if he were honest he would recognize how the unions have helped bankrupt industry and govt in this country.

is it harder to fire/discipline a union worker or non union worker? everyone knows the answer is yer. thus, with the chances and severity of punishment decreased, there is less of an incentive for union workers to do their fair share.

I have been around unions and there performance quotas.........they are set low and if you happen to exceed them you get reprimanded.............seen it with my own eyes
maybe all unions arent like this but thier culture sure breeds this type of enviroment

First off you should get your facts straight. Corporations are the ones destroying the country not unions, but hey you keep believing that big business bullshit they keep feeding you, while they tuck away billions and billions of tax free profits. Gotta love it, the union guy is the fall guy One companies ceo salary could equal 100 union people, but its them breaking the companies.
And for the record i dont agree with everyhthing unions do, so once again get your facts straight before you accuse somebody of something. One example is pension padding by union members, which i think is downright wrong and should be stopped in every union in the country. Doing that one thing would turn every pension fund in the country around.

Cd firefighters cant have quotas...you shouldnt even have a union that allows you extort more money from the taxpayers. You can't compare to private unions in many ways...you can only compare coffe breaks...thats it.

we extort money from taxpayers. get real. Trying to get raises is now considerd extorting money. Yeah i know, non un ion workers like yourself, dont try to get raises. Why dont you try doing the job of a firefighter, instead of pushing pencils all day long. If you think the job is all about sitting around drinking coffee, you have been watching one 2 many tv programs. I would have really though a guy selling insurance, knows what the job is about, guess i was wrong. Guys like you disgust me and when the day comes you or one of your family members need the services of a firefighter, remember all the nasty things you said whole they are pumping the chest of your loved one trying to save their lives.

Too bad you keep forgetting that I worked for Alcoa for 15 years before I started in insurance. I would still be there if I hadn't have had the accident that tore the cartilidge up in my wrist. I would have been making 16 bucks an hour. You think insurance is so lucrative but for the first few years you almost starve. Trust me...I earn every penny I make.
I don't need to make a case for unions...the fact that membership has been declining for several years makes my case for me.

sorry but your case isnt won. Unions have been declining, because all the middle income jobs making things have been moved overseas, so companies can extort other countries people. If you consider union membership down because union workers wont work for 10 bucks a day, then yeah i guess you won.
It comes down to you wanting people to work for less, so you can buy things for less, but dont fuck with your paycheck. If American workers are all over paid, then surely all of you insurance salesman are over paid as well. Start the trend for lower wages for the American worker, organize all your fellow agents to take 5k a year cuts in pay, so the American people can pay less on their insurance policies. The insurance industry is one of the most bloated profit person out there. Medical insurance is destroying our whole health care system

Start with TORT reform so that you can save doctors a grundel every year.
When I was 12 years old min wage in this country was 3 dollars an hour so you can just stop with that 10/day bullshit. It has been a very long time since American workers made 10/day.
I work for about 7-10% so I earn what I make. People come to me for what they purchase. I don't sell the overpriced stuff so the market acts like a conveyor belt for the smart ones.
Insurance companies are publicly traded so they have stock holders to account for just like most other companies.
Jobs moved overseas because union members mentallity of always wanting more despite the previously mentioned onset of robotics and awakened global competitors.
If you are an independant painting contractor and a competitor comes into your town bidding jobs much less than you are with the same quality...what are your choices?
1. Move somewhere else.
2. Increase your bids and lose even more business to him.
3. Start bidding to compete with him.
4. Become an artist and move to San Franciso.
Your union mentality doesn't allow you to do anything but #2.
Oh, but you will finally concede after the moving trucks have allready been loaded and headed for the freeway on-ramp. At which time you will offer much more concessions in your contract.

Your union mentality doesn't allow you to do anything but #2.

its a amazing how you guys keep blaming unions for moving jobs overseas, but never address the real reason which is there are people in other countries willing to do the job for 10 bucks a day. I guess some of you want the same thing for our country.
Its also amazing how if non union workers are such a great deal, why arent all those overseas companies rushing back to hire them? Its because they wont work for the same wages people over there will work for. You guys just will never grasp that fact.
Easy to say others are over paid, while sitting on your own perch protecting your own wages.
Bowl slit, are you and all your fellow agents going to take a 5k pay cut, because God knows all you guys are way over paid, with your salaries, perks, bonuses and golf trips.
You want everybody to work for crap wages, while you sit here and say you deserve to get paid what you do. unreal

For those that are public workers and do a good job
i bet you make $40K a year....
