Why basketball isn't a more popular sport

Question

The concept of the foul diminishes the integrity of the game. It makes the refs too influential in the outcome and takes the game out of the hands of the athletes. Fouls could be called on every drive to the basket and sometimes they are...and sometimes the aren't. It's too aribitrary. A guessing game.

I had Michigan ML so it worked out for me...but there's no way that wasn't a foul on OSU's final shot. Hardaway hit him across both arms and his head. It was obvious. But no whistle. I don't see how a true basketball fan couldn't feel let down by that kind of ending.

Not even close. PI gets called maybe once a game. Holding 3 maybe? How many fouls are there? And then how many are there that aren't called? We're talking about 5 percent of the plays in football....and nearly 100% in basketball.

but holding in football could get called every play was my point.  Not sure how theres no comparison... you call a thread "why basketball isnt a more popular sport" then your only argument is because fouls can be called on every play.. and that its a guessing game?  its the same thing in football... how many ppl were complaining that crabtree got held on his corner route at the end of the game?  but it was a no call.  your same argument can be made in football and its about as popular as it gets right now

The holding penalty is not nearly as influential to the outcome of a football game as the foul is to a basketball game. Come on know. You have to see the difference. Every basketball outcome is influenced by foul calls. Very few football games are decided by a hold or non-call on a hold.

And I'll give you the SB. I was disappointed as hell in that non-call and I'm a Rams fan so I have no love for the 49ers. That was obviously a penalty. But that was the exception for football...not the rule. In basketball, it's the other way around.

i dont understand why your all complaining. they easily could have called it a flagrant when craft hit him in the head. or how about the 3 craft hit that was after the buzzer. and wehn michigan finally caught up a player from osu clearly traveled before passing it for an open 3. thats a free 6 points not including the possible flagrant. never should have even come down to the end

Craft blew that game for OSU periodHe took their last 3 shots. The 2 drives to the basket were terrible especially the one at the end. They&#x27;re not going to call anything there unless its very obvious , And before that the pull-up when he go blocked he had a guy wide open in the corner

ok one thing at a time..."The concept of a foul diminishes the integrity of the game"....the "concept of a foul" means there are rules and there are infractions to the rules...without rules then, well, you have chaos...and thus you have referees.."It makes the refs too influential in the outcome and takes the game out of the hands of the athletes." ...then you go on and state a scenario in which the the referees stay back and let the players play and you have a problem with that..in other words the refs let them play , and NOT call a foul...so what is it?..your whole statement is ambiguous...

The holding penalty I think is a big deal in football...it just screws up all kind of drives and momentum from the start to the finish...i wish they would put some kind of oven mitt type gloves on the offense lines hands to diminish that whole holding thing...also the defensive back could wear them too...come to think of it everyone, offense and defense except the center and the quarterback...( i hereby copy write this idea, on this date)

Im serious......EVERY PLAY !! Also many many games are decided either directly or indirectly from calls or non calls.

Every sport hasits pitfalls when it comes to officiating potentially dictating outcomes of games. I have been watching hockey ever since I can remember and I have no clue what a hooking/holding/or interference penalty is anymore. It is maddening. Basketball is very inconsistent from crew to crew as well. Football flags have a huge effect on the game, how many 3rd down drive extending flags did we see this year? Quite a few and those potentially impact the game more than any call in any sport. Baseball can have badge moving strike zone, blown calls at any bag etc...

Football has definitely gotten worse in this regard.  They&#x27;ve over legislated the game.  A fumble isn&#x27;t a fumble any more.  A catch isn&#x27;t a catch any more.  A sack isn&#x27;t a sack because you didn&#x27;t hit the QBs strike zone.  And the defensive penalties have absolutely gotten skewed way too far in favor of the offense.  All that being said...we all know what football penalties look like when we see them.  Fouls are ghost calls based on the mood of the ref.
