If you’re the kind of bettor that doesn’t get excited about college hoops until conference play or even the opening day of the tournament, I have a dare for you.
Carve about two hours or so out of your busy schedule for Tuesday night’s meeting between the Virginia Tech Hokies and Kansas State Wildcats (-6.5). This battle of Top 25 programs promises to be the highlight of your week and, I guarantee you, it will get you watching and wagering on NCAA basketball immediately.
How can I be so sure? Tuesday’s game has the best head-to-head player matchup you may see all season. And this season is only about a week old. Virginia Tech’s Malcolm Delaney and Kansas State’s Jacob Pullen are two of the most gifted scorers playing in Div-1 and will go basket-for-basket in Manhattan, Kansas.
"It'll be a good challenge, playing against a team like that with (a lot of) returners and players who want to get to the NCAA tournament," Pullen told reporters Monday. "It's 'go time' early in the season.... It's a great matchup between me and Malcolm."
Delaney led the ACC in scoring last season, but you had no clue, what with your love affair with Duke and UNC. He scored 20.2 points per game last season, just one point more than Pullen, who finished third in the Big 12 in buckets. He gained national fame during conference play and took KSU all the way to the regional finals before losing to Butler in the NCAA.
So forget about that whack-ass MAC game or the NBA and NHL, the best show in town is in college hoops Tuesday night. If you don’t believe me, just watch the game.
