Another terrific night last night as my strongest NBA pick of the year, the Cavs, covered with ease over the Suns. I will continue my hot streak tonight with a SU winning dog in College Baskets.
I am very confident that a certain basketball tradition will continue tonight. That tradition is Youngstown State not losing to Detroit U in regulation since 2007 (a 6 game span). The YSU Penguins have beaten Detroit SU in 5 of the last 6 meetings, with the exception of one 4 point loss in OT.
As the public is "squarely" on Detroit u right now -5.5 at a 75% clip, the line has not moved off the number.
Although Youngstown State is 3-3 overall, two of those losses cam at Pitt and also at Xavier (both top 20 teams when those games at tipped-off.) YSU's loss to Pitt last time out actually interrupted a mini 2 game win streak for the Penguin teams who are battled tested in road games this year having played 3 total had including a 1-2 mark in true road games. The third road game (outside of Pitt and Xavier) was a win at St. Peter's. YSU's schedule strength coming into tonight is 17th most difficult in the nation.
Here is the exciting part, Youngstown State did us a favor by losing to Pitt last time out 72-56. Going into that game, as I mentioned before, YSU had won 2 in a row and was just starting to become a pretty damn respectable team (although the Pitt score would indicate otherwise) the final score vs Pitt was not reflective of that game as Pitt Fans probably had no finger nails left mid way into the 2nd half.
Pitt was befuddled most of the game by a YSU defensive 2-3 trapping zone that forced Pitt into 17 turnovers. YSU kept the top 5 Pitt Panthers sweating bullets and had the game knotted at 42-42 with just 11:51 left in regulation. It wasn't until a few minutes later that back to back 3 point baskets by Pitt made the lead insurmountable for the traveling Penuins leading to the final margin of a deceiving 16. This game was about two minutes away from getting tagged with the upset alert crawler.
As for Detroit, they lost 68-66 in OT to DePaul last Saturday. Detroit U, who had won a four-game win streak going into that one. Before we get excited about that 4 game win streak DET enjoyed prior to the Depaul game, we must note that Robert Morris, Alcorn State and Albany U were the casualties (had Detroit played at Pitt and Xavier they probably would be (2-6 instead of 4-4).
Tonight Youngstown State will continue to play has play their vaunted 2-3 zone that has been super so far this season, limiting teams to 61 ppg on UNDER 40% FG percent shooting from the floor.
I look for Youngstown State to play very tough tonight and show their SU record is really not reflective of their ability and for Detroit U to do the same thing (in reverse). The visiting YSU team takes it SU on Detroit floor.
Youngstown State +5.5
GL!
