Marist/Houston (10am)
Houston
The Cougars head into 2007-08 as one of the teams jockeying for second place in Conference USA. Tom Penders has what he believes may be his most talented Cougar team to date on campus, including guards Lanny Smith, Robert McKiver (his nickname: Fluff) and Marcus Malone. But the Coogs will also have six newcomers to work into the fold, such as Seton Hall transfer Marcus Cousin, Auburn transfer Kelvin Lewis and junior college All-American DaShaun Williams. This team will run, making for an entertaining brand of basketball. Four Houston, this tournament will be just as much about building a chemistry between the returnees and newcomers as it is winning.
Marist
Just like VCU, Marist won their conference’s regular season title. But, Marist has to replace both guards from that team (Jared Jordan and Will Whittington), something that won’t be easy to do. An influx of fresh faces will need to produce in order for the Red Foxes to have a successful season, but there are some returnees who will have an impact as well. Forwards Ryan Stilphen, Ben Farmer and Spongy Benjamin are all back for their senior season, and Benjamin already has things rolling after putting up 21 and 17 in their opener. Guards David Devezin, Dejuan Goodwin and Jay Gavin all scored in double figures in the opener, which is a good sign for a team that could be without Syracuse transfer for the foreseeable future. Marist was picked to finish fifth in the MAAC this season, but that league is practically wide-open at the top. This weekend will help get the guards some experience against top teams, which should only help them come conference play.

Charlotte +9.5 vs. suspect G'Tech
G'Tech: Alace Aminu had career highs with 25 points and nine rebounds as Georgia Tech avoided another upset Sunday night with a 99-85 win over Tennessee State.

N.C. Greensboro L 74-83
at Tennessee St. W 99-85Charlotte: Leemire Goldwire scored a career high 33 points and Charlotte pulled away in the second half for an 84-78 win over Appalachian State on Monday.

Much has been made of Charlotte's newfound athleticism, which has helped the 49ers to a 2-0 start.
Charlotte's athleticism is apparent in the talent shown by forwards Charlie Coley and An'Juan Wilderness and in the 49ers' defensive effort.
Then, there is the athleticism the 49ers will see from Georgia Tech, their first-round opponent today in the Paradise Jam tournament at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center. There is a difference, Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz said.
"Georgia Tech is more athletic than we are, but we are certainly more comparable to them now than we were last year," Lutz said. "We've had some very athletic teams in the past, but last year's wasn't.
"That's what we've been preaching to our guys since Tuesday. This is by far the most athletic team at every position that we may play. It's a concern, but I believe we have the athletic ability and depth to counter that."
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) rely heavily on 6-foot-5 guard Anthony Morrow and 6-10 forward Alade Aminu, who is averaging 15 points and nine rebounds. Georgia Tech also has 16 steals in two games.
Still, without point guard Michael Gerrity until the end of the first semester, Charlotte has relied much on senior Leemire Goldwire for leadership and scoring. He scored a career-high 33 in Monday's win against Appalachian State.
Yet the 49ers have been able to call on their bench for reliable contributions, something last year's team struggled with, particularly when the starters got tired.
Coley is the team's second-leading scorer (10.0 points per game). He leads the team in rebounds (13) and blocks (5). Four other players average between 6.5 and 7 points.
The game against Georgia Tech is the first of four Charlotte will play this season against ACC teams, and the only one on a neutral court. The teams last met in February 1986, when the 49ers lost 87-76 in Atlanta.
"I know it really means a lot for our fans to get a chance against ACC teams. I think our guys respect the ACC and they're excited about it as well," Lutz said.

Charlotte's focus during much of Thursday's practice was working to counter Georgia Tech's running game. Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz was particularly emphasizing his team's need to get back on defense after made shots and stepping in to take charges when the Yellow Jackets drive to the basket.

interesting
UNC Greensboro 83, Georgia Tech 74
The Yellow Jackets clearly have plenty of work to do after losing both Javaris Crittenton and Thaddeus Young to the NBA.

i hate teasing across the # 0.
If you think Illinois is going to win the game, there is a great chance they win by more than 3. The difference between -3 and +1.5 is essentially nothing.

if i were to play houston/marist
it'd have to be marist for the game
they had quite a few good looks yesterday in their offense, just didn't knock them down
bad loss for houston yesterday, not sure how they bounce back
i had this game lined at houston -7

I don't like hearing 8 year head coaches trying to "figure out what kind of team they are".
Georgia Southern fell to its first-round opponent Florida State 92-67 Monday in Tallahassee. After a promising start, a tie game with six minutes remaining in the first half quickly turned into a 12-point halftime deficit and a 25-point defeat.
“I just think we need to continue to learn what type of team we are,” said head coach Jeff Price, “and it’s going to take some games to do that. But eventually we’re going to have to learn as a team what our identity is and how we need to play. We need to get off the 3-point line and get to the foul line more. That’s the type of team we’re going to have. After our transition we need to show more patience in the half-court and learn that this team is different than past teams and that’s not a bad thing. That can be a good thing, but we just have to learn what type of team we are.”
In eight years, head coach Jeff Price has instituted a work ethic that has directed the Eagles back into the upper echelons of the nation’s top mid-major programs. His penchant for speed has led the Eagles to three Southern Conference South Division titles and a overall record of 137-99.
