2004 gold:  nicolas massu  (roger federer was beginning to dominate tennis and roddick was rising, but this no-name won it??)

in other words, most of the top players don't really care about who wins the gold, so you are making a bad wager

Actually they very much care.... you get a chance at a gold medal every 4 years...you get a chance at a major 4 times a year

the only time he's ever made even the 4th round of a tourney was the 2005 us open.  yeah, i'm sure the other players on the ATP tour really cared, which is why this guy has never made GS quarters in his life, won the gold medal in 2004

Mecir was a decent player but only made 2 GS finals in his career (he had to play in the era of tennis giants like mcenroe, lendl, becker, edberg, wilander, etc).  but, as fate would have it he won the gold at the olympics but ZERO grand slams in his career.

we'll see how much they care in london when the french and wimbledon tourneys are over, and they are exhausted wanting rest before the hardcourt season.
