Pipo Volandri plays in the AO for the 1st time since 08. Volandri a clay court player.... has been and is awful on hard courts. He hasn't won a set since beating Hartfield in Doha in 07
Andreev comes into the 1st round with a round of 16 loss in Sydney to Gulbis.
Head to head meetings were all on clay so they are not worth mentioning.
Both have an opponent in common Berankis...Volandri losing 0-1 and Andreev winning 6-4 7-6
Thoughts:
Volandri is a fish out of water on fast surfaces. His serve is one of the weakest on tour and his game is designed to create errors instead of hitting winners. Andreev has a decent 1st serve and has the weaponry to blow Pipo off the court. Volandri's only chance is if the tank job is on... and lets face it... its always in play with "The fixer".
Am playing Andreev -8.5 here
He should be able to dominate this match from start to finish

Am hoping that Mardy Fish puts his best foot forward here. Mardy since losing some weight has been playing the best tennis of his life. He is more nimble on the court and is carrying a better attitude into matches. Hard courts are Mardy's best surface and he will be looking to improve on a disappointing result last season.
Hanescu is still a dangerous player... he has a solid 1st serve and forehand. He beat Anderson in his lead-up and lost tiebreakers in losses to Gulbis and Almagro.
Match could be tight early... especially if Hanerscu gets alot of 1st balls in... just think if Mardy stays patient and aggressive he gets the win here... and because of the lopsided loss to Radek his line is a little low.
Haase should have no problems for the clay courter Berlocq. If Haase keeps the winners to errors ration within reason he should cruise here. I don't believe Berlocq has ever beaten a top 100 player on hard courts.
Federer was just to make the odds over 1 to 1...don't think explanation is needed.
Davy and Mayer is an interesting match... Mayer played decent in his lead-up. Didn't really beat anyone of note...don't consider Delpo right now a huge scalp.
Davy played well in Doha beating a sick Nadal before losing to Fed.
Davy has the superior ground-strokes in this match-up. Mayer doesn't have a great 1st serve and Davy is still one of the better returners on tour. If Davy gets a decent 1st serve % in and can grind Mayer down in the rallies he should be able to progress.

Rough day yesterday...awful performance by Davy and then just a putrid serving effort from Andreev. On to tonight.

Bojana Jovanovski comes in as maybe the hottest player on the WTA tour. She is 16-3 in her last 19 and has claimed the scalps of Kanepi-Rezai-Pennetta and Sevastova.
Chang comes into the match with no lead up...this will be her 1st match of the year.

Bojana is hot and should have the confidence to defeat a player playing her 1st match of the year. Chang is no slouch...but should have a tough time
Phau comes into his match tonight off of wins over Gasquet and Bolelli.
Raonic came through qualies ...winning 3 matches
Raonic is a young and talented player with a big 1st serve and forehand. He has the weaponry to blow Phau off of the court. Phau though is fairly speedy for his age...he has the speed to get extra balls back into play that could frustrate Raonic.
I just think Raonic will hold easier and will put some pressure on the Phau serve and will get through here.
After last night though...who knows
