- James Blake has slipped to Number 55 in the world now
- He has 845 points and has to defend 40% of them in Estoril, he won the tournament in 2009, and Queens, he reached the final losing to Murray. I don't think he believes he will defend anything there, especially in Estoril. Also in Queens last year he reached the final because Roddick slipped and rolled his ankle before Wimbledon and cautiously pulled out...
- 250 points here will do A LOT for him because if he doesn't defend the above mentioned points he will most likely be out of the Top 100 and might as well just quit as he is too old.
- Draw: Dent, Kendrick, Karlovic, Fish and Gulbis or Korolev in the final (worst case scenario). Delray plays slow and Serve & Volley players are not favored and his first 4 matches should be against serve and volleyers. If he tries hard he should reach the QF easily and play his chances against Karlovic with whom he has won 2 out of 3 in 2009 and the loss came in a Davis Cup 5 sets thriller.
He probably won't get any better shot at 250 points for his career also considering we are in the USA. If he wants to hang in with the big boys he needs to win here, I am willing to give it a shot.
Sorry I can't post much these days, I am busy, but thought this was a good play angle and decided to share.

These points make me consider a person I would never bet on. ...I am afraid I have an extensive DNP list and James is very definitely on it. Talk about a stubborn, never change your game approach to tennis.Sheesh.He makes Roddick look like a adaptive court genius.
In any case, a small small small one makes sense for all reasons elaborated.I do not see him winning the tournament, but he as a shot, that is for sure.

Yeah, Vermeer, I hear you. I do enjoy watching Blake when he is on but he is far from the sort of guy I am comfortable in backing. This time however being a 6 to 1 shot and considering the circumstances I am willing to give it a try because he should be the favorite in every one of his matches, apart from Karlovic where I reckon odds would be 50/50 and this consideration only makes the 6 to 1 value.
caglarue
I wouldn't bet this today. I would wait to see if he shows up to play and if he does you could pile up on his second round match which should be much easier than tonight's.

I know I am on him for 4 already vs Dent, and I usually never bet on the guy. I actually fade Blake most of the time but strongly feel like this is a match he should win. So... I hope your plan makes it through the first phase!
If he cannot beat Dent when this hungry he truly is hopeless.

While I am superstitious like every current or former athlete I know, I hope I have not doomed this play!!
Blake just exasperates the hell out of me with his grip it and rip it every day all day approach to the game.Like a change of pace is not crucial to unbalancing the opposition.
They just wait for him to hit a cold spot, and then he never adjusts.
But looked at individually, you are right on the matchups .
Worth a shot.I think he has had an amazing career considering the serious injuries(particularly the bizarre and almost tragic one in Rome) and I like the guy's effort, just wish someone had gotten through to him earlier that variety is essential, no matter how far your strengths have gotten you. If Fed knows this, and he does, and made adjustments even as number one, why lower ranked guys don't get it is a wonder to me.

I hope you are well buddy, thanks for dropping by!

Let's hope Blake takes the first match, then we'll see what happens, apparently Kendirck and Haase are going to a third set. Halfway in the second they already gave their opponent 7 and 5 break points so neither one should be a particular threat to Blake.
On the other hand Karlovic recorded his usual big stats behind serve so Blake would really need to step it up there, but let's go there step by step.

No doubt bro. Step by step. Your first step is vital to me too. I know you never lay this type of juice (I think the closest I saw you come was Wozniacki vs Oudin) but seems obvious that you agree that this match vs Dent is huge for Blake. I think Dent should be the less hungry of the two and that his S&V style should get beat by Blake who seems to love killing people who play that style.
I am psyched about this one, this is my biggest bet on Blake ever by far. Four units and the most I ever put on him before was one. If he does not win in this situation on this court vs this player I doubt I will ever bet him as a fave again.

yeah bb I dodged some big ones as well. Davydenko Verdasco and Gonzalez. Those were all right to the wire. Now Blake is similar. He was only up a break had already choked away match points and is a known choker anyway. So yeah, not too comfortable waiting for this. Not the way today has gone.
