I was just as impressed with Rory's performance as the next guy...and there is no doubt that he has an incredible amount of talent...but let's not vault him into the discussion this soon.
Reading the ESPN article by Gene Wojchiekowski (I know not the greatest source) is almost embarassing. Officially gaining the title of "Next Tiger Woods"? Did we not learn anything from the LeBron James/Michael Jordan situation?
Just because an athlete has an outstanding performance or shows a lot of potential doesn't mean we need to boost him up and put a ton of undue pressure on said athlete.
Let's just let the kid enjoy his first major victory and hopefully get some great experience in the majors.

Totally agree, all of these statements are getting pretty ridiculous...Pretty sure I heard on the radio the McDowell said that Rory was the best golfer he has ever seen ....and I just looked at the odds on the Open Championship next month, and Rory is 5/1,people would have to be idiotic to back him with such little return here

He said he was the best driver of the golf ball he'd seen, not the best player.

I agree for the most part. The Lebron/MJ comparison ... not so much. LBJ hasn't won anything. Rory now has. I'm not willing to say he's the next Tiger, let's just let him be the new Rory for now.

it's just common for people to look for the next superstar. rory is the youngest to win the us open since bobby jones. rory shot a 63 or 64 at st andrews i believe in the open. big lead after 3 at the masters. he'd be my pick for the next guy to give 18 a run.

Rory is already a much more consistent player than Phil...and not even 1/2 as much of a risk taker. Which in my mind tells me that he will win more majors than Dickelson.

If you really want to compare Rory to someone early in his career check out Tom Watson...54 hole leader at the '74 US Open only to blow up with a 79 on Sunday, but came back the following year and won the British. The first of 8 majors. If you take into account that Watson played four years at Stanford while Rory skipped college and played a lot of amateur ball instead, their professional careers have a ton of similarities through the first 3-4 years.
If you then compare Rory to Tiger's first 3-4 years you will realize he is nowhere near Tiger at this point outside of this past week. Tiger had 20+ wins including 5 majors in his first 4 years as a pro....Rory would have to virtually win every tourney and major he entered in the next 12 months to be on par with Tiger. How quickly we forget what an incredible show Tiger put on in the late '90's just because it turns out he is a douche.

Actually in his first 100 pro tourneys Tiger won 28 times.. In Rory's first 100 pro tourneys he has won 3 times.. That Tiger start of 100 tourneys with 28 wins will NEVER EVER be matched.. EVER...A record stronger then Joey D's in baseball.. Fields to tough now from top to bottom.. 10 times tougher top to bottom then in Jacks era.. Jacks era MAY have been more top heavy and that is even a debate... But overall its not even close.. It is now an International game every weekend on the PGA tour..

Nicklaus competed against Palmer, Player, Watson, Trevino, Miller et.al.
Oh yes, Tiger had to compete against Mickelson, Couples, Singh, Els and eventually one who had a set... Yang.
Having seen both sets of competitors play, one set was for the most part gutless and soft. I'll let the readers decide which one it was. For those that is who were around to have seen both sets play.

what will be they saying WHEN rory wins the british...
F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote: "Show me a hero, and I will write you a tragedy".
What goes up, must come down. Look at the Godlike status Woods and others had in their golden youth. Time marches on and youth will be served and so it is the young Irishman's time to shine.
I hope that when it is over, it does not come crashing down as it has for the the ex king. I mean what can he do now for an encore. You ain't seen nothing yet?

If Rory wins the British then everyone will continue with the Tiger comparisons. And I'll be here to throw it right back to Paddy Harrington who won a couple majors without a prime Tiger.
Even though Tiger has lost quite a bit of his talent (mostly due to the fact that everyone is trying to change his swing), when he is in the tournament it changes things. It's all mental.

I posted a couple weeks ago about this Tiger-Rory craziness, but let me add this.
For anyone who considers Rory a legit favorite in the Open, think about
it historically before rushing to crown the 21 year old the next great
whatever. Actually if he wins next week you could make the argument he
is the best EVER historically, so if you're not ready to say that then maybe we should slow down a bit.
Since
Jack won his first major in 1962 there have been just under 200 majors
played...that means there have been almost 200 chances for a major
champion to win back to back majors right?
IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED 9
TIMES in that timeframe....once each by Jack, Trevino, Watson,
Mickelson, Nick Price, and Paddy Harrington, along with THREE TIMES BY
ELDRICK WOODS, including him being the only man to hold all 4 trophies
at the same time. That is 4 hall of famers, 2 sure fire hall of famers,
and Harrington who has a good shot. Rory is that good already? I
think not. He has more meltdowns than wins so far in his career.
Do the math on that for a minute...take away Tiger and
it means the rest of the golfing world has managed to go back to back
in about 6 of 185 chances or approximately 3% of the time. Including
Tiger it is still less than a 5% success rate.
In fact Tiger was 25 when he got his 2nd major, a run of 10 straight non-wins (then he
won 6 of the next 10 which is flat out crazy) at the same stage in his
career as Rory is now. By the way, NO ONE PERIOD has ever come close winning 6 majors in 10 tries....EVER.
To think that Rory, at 21 years old, is ready to start tacking on the majors at a rate better than Jack, Tiger, Watson, Trevino, Palmer, Player, etc. is ludicrous. It could happen but we are at least a year early in starting these comparisons. The US Open was a huge win for Rory and
COULD be a sign of great things to come, but maybe it's a good idea we
let him actually accomplish some of this before crowning him.

He held all four majors at the same time...winning the US Open, British Open, PGA Champ, and then the Masters the following spring. So between April and June of 2003? he had all four majors
