Open Question for Covers Older Members

Now, considering I'm in my mid-twenties....one thing I've tried to do is ask as many people with different perspectives (and experiences) for advice about their lives (regrets, successes, recommendations etc). Seeing that there's a diverse group of regular members here with interesting lives and a lot to offer, it would be pretty interesting for guys to share life advice non-gambling related.
 
I'm not talking Opera (This isn't your diary Greyhound so keep the Leona Lewis shit outta here)....more like stuff you've done or places you've gone that we're definitely life-changing (Or things you wish you had done if you had a shot again).

tsizz, packing up and moving 7000 miles was one of the best things I have ever done. The reasons are endless. More then anything it got me out of a comfort zone that moving across state lines would never do. Experiencing a different culture, not just witnessing it like you do on a vacation, but actually living it. Six months ago i became a dual citizen, no regrets.

Another thing is working for myself. No matter how hard I work I get all the benefits, not somebofy up the corporate hierachy. No matter you field everybody should back their ability and venture out on their own. Success doesn't happen overnight, but if you are willing to put in the effort then rewards will come your way.

tsizz, i would have to say there is no secret to success, find a way to get there and do what it takes to get there or shut the fuck up

never walk away from a situation wondering what would have happened if you just went for it, whether it be a girl, a business oppurtunity,or whatever .. you never know until you ask or try...living with regrets is the worst...

some of the best memories i have are when i have travled, so i would travel when you are young and can do it

On Work:
 
Get out of school, and work in your profession employed by somebody.  Save your money, and when you hit early 30's, try it on your own.
 
You've seen how it was done..if you are sharp you should have picked up on how you could do it just a little bit better and then aim at a smaller niche market.
 
You will make money, you will lose money, you will make more money, etc.  As long as you have your health and the right attitude, you can probably make it own your own.  At the end of the day, when you look back on it, everything you accomplished was because of your own hard work.
 
Nothing more satisfying than that.
 
On Family:
 
Start one when you are ready....no big rush...I got started at 32.  Having kids will be the most enjoyable and challenging thing you will ever do. And the most important.
 
But there is a difference between having a kid, and having a kid and being a parent to them. If you do not want to devote the time to raising them, have pets instead.
 
You will have 12 to 15 years to be the biggest influence in their lives (an influence that will carry through in everything they do in their lives) ...and then it goes on autopilot.

tsizz, great post.  You should try and learn from older people.  I would say choose your friends wisely.  Hang around sucessfull positive people.  Don't be afraid to take chances in life.  Pick a career you will enjoy.  Nothing worse then guys talking about their job 24 hrs. a day.  Live with your women before you marry her.
 
Regrets, I wish I went to a bigger college.  It would of been fun supporting your school in sports and other crap.

Family......#1 Be prepared to give your Marriage your ALL.
Too many kids today get married and at the first sign of a
problem say F#ck it and get divorced. Marriage is a life
long commitment and takes alot of work,patience, and
understanding. Believe me, It's worth it.
 
Making a Living....Fine a Job you Love, and you'll never
work again.
 
Don't be afraid to fail....He who never made a mistake,
never made a discovery. Keep the Faith, Do what's Right.
And remember..Good things happen to Good People.
 
Lastly...You don't have to stand tall, but you have to stand up.

-work for yourself...if you cant do that, then be happy in your career. there's nothing worse than spending 40+ hours a week doing something you hate

-be more aggressive...in deals, in negotiations, with women. the worst they can say is no

-carry as little debt as possible...use cash or debit cards only

-define success on your own terms...money, family, home life, comfort. what is most important to you?

-until you and a woman buy something together, keep everything in your name (if you own a house or a car)

-ALWAYS sock some cash away out of every paycheck...IRA, savings, 401k...anything. set it up as direct deduction and you'll never think about it

Travel - see as many different types of places as you can, especially other countries. I was born and raised in the suburbs of NYC and people around here tend to think they know it all and have seen it all. Not true. Some of the best places I've been are the mountains of Colorado (Denver and Boulder), the coast of Maine (Bar Harbor), Hawaii (Maui in particular), Paris (contrary to popular belief the people there were awesome when I went).
 
Money - respect it but don't let it define you. Avoid credit cards.
 
Great advice by ApacheM - don't be afraid to fail because you will at times no matter how hard you try and whether you are right or wrong.
 
Be independent. Financially and intellectually. This is something I wish I had done a lot sooner. I had it easy when I was younger and coasted through life for a while. To one degree or another I let people take care of me rather than doing for myself. It made me apathetic and unappreciative.
 
Work hard. Whether you like what you are doing or not. IMO, how one performs at their job is a reflection on the type of person they are. It shows integrity.

I'm 38 and at times i've coasted , at times I've busted my ass and been more successful and happier ..
Travel ...
 
Surround yourself with WINNING , Can DO attitudes ...
 
Often , Attitude determines Altitude ...
Smell the roses ...
BE Bold in your actions ... people will remember you more ..
AVOID TOXIC relationships with women ... it's a big sea in witch to fish..
Don't be rigid in your thought processes ..

money
401k, savings, investments, whatever, i always have a minimum of 15% of any income going directly to these for use at a later time.  however, you can't take it with when you take that one way journey to the morgue,  so i don't let my desire to save money for the future control all my actions now.  you gotta live to.  outside of a mortgage, i keep consumer debt to an absolute minimum or zero.
 
travel
i travel as much as possible,  while i think it's great to see new places,  i also repeat many destinations.  i know what i like and sometimes i want to simply enjoy what i like.
 
work
someone said it above,  find a job you love and your days of working are over.  also, i take advantage of chances to work overseas,  while traveling for fun is just fiine. i find that i get immersed in the culture when I'm working.  besides, i find travelling for fun to be more work than working in a foreign country.
 
family
i can't imagine be married to a woman without having lived with her for a lengthy period of time.  i'm not changing my ways too much, so she might as well know what she's getting into.
 
education
i wished i had thoroughly learned a foreign language in college, i know enough spanish and italian to be slightly dangerous to myself, but not nearly as much as i want to know.  big schools and all that comes with them are the way to go.  even though i invest in almost every kind of sport, i do enjoy have a vested interest of pride in watching my school compete even though I've been gone for several years.

When you purchase your first home, buy a duplex. Buy it in an area you can easily afford. Rent the other side ... live rent free. Save the "free rent" until you can buy another in a better part of town, rent the side you live in and move into the better one. Repeat this process as many times as you can, it will be hard to resist the temptation to have a "house" but when you pull that trigger it will be much nicer and effectively free. God ain"t making anymore dirt.
