I'm not a scripture expert, but not so sure the bible says the Earth is only a few thousand years old. I think it says "man" is about six thousand years old.

In the begining God created the heavens and the earth.
The first week of creation can be broken down into two parts, separation, and filling.
i.e. Light/Darkness : separation, and Sun/Moon and stars : filling
So, we know that the earth was six days old when Adam was created.
Adam was 130 when Seth was born (Gen. 5:3)
Adding up the dates in the geneology is not terribly difficult from there. Seth lived 105 years and had Enos. Enos lived 90 years and had Cainan. Cainan lived 70 years and had Mahalaleel. Mahalaleel lived 65 years, and had Jared. Jared lived a 162 years, and had Enoch. Enoch lived 65 years, and had Methuselah. Methuselah lived 187 years, and had Lamech. Lamech lived 182 and had Noah. Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Noah was 600 years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
That gives us 1656 years from the creation to the flood.
Shem was 100 years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood. (Genesis 11:10) Year AC 1658
Arphaxad lived 35 years, and had Salah AC 1693
Salah lived 30 years, and had Eber AC 1723
Eber lived 34 years, and had Peleg AC 1757
Anyway, that's how you follow the geneologies through Abraham, and to the person, and through them until the time of Malachi and then there's about a 400 year gap until Jesus and the new testament.
Add it all up and you will come up with roughly 2400 years from the flood to Jesus.
The current year is 2006 after Christ.
1656 +/- years from the creation to the flood.
2400 +/- years from the flood to the Christ.
2006 +/- years from the Christ to today.
6062 Total (approx.)
