all you guys 50yrs.+. I just had my 3rd colonoscopy April 1 and they found 2nd stage colon cancer. I was operated on April 8 and got home April 15 with an estimated recovery time of 3mos. Colonoscopy is the only way to find it. So, don't overlook this important checkup as you get older. Family and friends need to be reminded also. It's not as bad as it sounds and the findings can save your life.

10yrs does seem like a long time. I had my last one in 2008. Be aware of extended periods of constipation or direhhia my signs were direhhia for about 2mos.

Early detection and minor treatment are always better than major surgery and therapy later when disease is harder to cure. Some foods and drugs tend to reduce the risk of colon cancer such as yogurt and aspirin.

As a doc I will add screening for colon cancer should be done at 50 or 10 years from the time a first degree relative had a problem. For instance, if your brother has colon cancer at 43, you get your first colonoscopy at 33.
It should also be done for any concerning signs like bleeding, change in stool size or consistency etc (now it is not screening though but looking for a problem)
If your colonoscopy is negative, then you can wait 10 years for the next one. This is because most colon cancers grow so slowly, there will still be time to remove it in 10 years.
I tell my patients this too-
If you want to live a long life
1) Do not smoke or use chewing tobacco, these are the number 1 preventable killers in America
2) Get a colonoscopy as discussed above
3) You need to excercise only on the days when you eat ( yes everyday)
4) Watch your weight, learn your bmi
5) Only drink 1-2 drinks a day. A drink is a 12oz beer, 4 oz wine or 1.5oz shot..
Hope it helps, I am happy your cancer was found early!
