Every time I watch this movie I go into a deep depression. The whole thing is so messed up. Even production was screwy. Keitel getting fired a week in, Hopper on cocaine 24/7, Sheen having a heart attack, storms destroying sets, the end scene where a real cow gets hacked up.
Funny thing about Brando is he didn't even learn his lines. They had to take a week off and read them to him. During his later years, he refused to learn lines so they fitted him with an ear piece and fed him what he was supposed to say. The ear piece sometimes picked up police chatter so sometimes he would blurt out..."Murder suspect on foot, White male. 200lbs. Running east on 95." Funny shit. Guy became a mess at the end of his life.

I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor... and surviving.

Apocalypse Now Redux would really f8ck you up. In my opinion the best movie made in my lifetime.
Redux is what should have been released in the first place. the French Plantation scenes really fill in a lot of unanswered questions. should have at least added that in the original.
everyone remembers "I Love The Smell of Naphalm In the Morning" BUT for my money, the greatest lines were...
Kurtz: Did they say why, Willard, why they want to terminate my command? Willard: I was sent on a classified mission, sir. Kurtz: It's no longer classified, is it? Did they tell you? Willard: They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound. Kurtz: Are my methods unsound? Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir. Kurtz: I expected someone like you. What did you expect? Are you an assassin? Willard: I'm a soldier. Kurtz: You're neither. You're an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill.

Apocalypse Now was influenced by an earlier movie, Aguirre, the Wrath of God. It also has an interesting backstory. Lead actor Klaus Kinski was a bit unhinged. He shot at some extras who were bothering him, one of them lost a finger. Kinski also threatened to quit the film halfway through. Director Werner Herzog threatened to kill him, then himself, if Kinski walked away.

casualties of war better than apocalypse now? that's like saying family ties is better than the wire.
My point is many people are just band wagon movie watchers, NOT to belittle or diminish Apocalypse Now but there are many other movies that are just as good possibly even better.
It's like saying Saving Private Ryan is the best WWII movie.. It may be the most popular it may even be the best according to some but there is certainly a debate among movie connoisseurs between many films just like there are among vietnam war movies....

Sorry, but I don't even consider Casualties of War a good movie. Certainly there is subjectivity involved when evaluating a movie. But films like Saving Private Ryan and series such as Band of Brothers are just flat out better war films.
When I watched Band of Brothers for the first time, I rented the first disc for starters. I watched both episodes that night. They were so good I took the disc back the next day and rented all the rest. Stayed up until 5:00 a.m. so I could watch every last second.
The episode when they were at Bastogne was so good that I got cold while watching it.
Just a tad better than:
"Are you religious, son? I'm a Methodist."
"I'm a Lutheran."
"Well we can still talk, can't we?"
"And they raped her....and murdered her.....and I failed to stop them."
I was waiting for M. J. Fox to start talking about his love for Ronald Reagan.
Sorry, but Casualties of War wouldn't make my top 20 war movies.

Band of Brothers has to be the BEST WWII series EVER.
btw, IF you want to see aother GREAT movie about WWII in Europe, check out The Victors (1963), VERY well acted by George Peppard, George Hamilton and Eli Wallach. it basically shows the dehumanizing effect of battle on the average soldier in the war.
also Enemy at the Gates (2001) with Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz and Ed Harris is an outstanding telling of Battle of Stalingrad with emphasis on the "sniper duel" between the Russian Vassili Zaitsev and the German Major Erwin Konig. Bob Hoskins is scary good as Nikita Khrushchev. it's the BEST commercially produced movie I have ever seen about "The Great Patriotic War"
also the first half of Full Metal Jacket (1987) has to be the most accurate depiction of Marine Corps Boot Camp EVER mostly because R. Lee Ermey, as the Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, actually had been a Marine DI during his career in the Marine Corps
I give all three out of three
AND I will agree with HutchEmAll'sSorry, but I don't even consider Casualties of War a good movie. I thought it was nothing but a "bash" on Vietnam veterans

hutch, casualties of war definitely makes my top 15 war movies of all time, easily. I'm not sure how you can count it out. There times in this movie that are devastating and gruesome. Felt very real.
To be honest not really big fan of band of brothers. I don't hate it but I preferred The Pacific more. The campaign on the japanese side was far more brutal also, but that series of episodes I felt were more powerful than the band of brothers ones.
Both are great though
club, you wont be disappointed. It's very intense. The horrific conduct that these soldiers engaged in during with the Vietnamese girls during the war depicted in the film was harrowing. It will definitely sting your mind. There are some really terrifying and disturbing scenes in this film.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God has a fantastic score as well.
Im surprised nobody has mentioned "Patton" or Kubrick's "Paths of Glory".
I too think Casualties of War was a bash against soldiers and the characters came across as mindless cartoonish villains.

we also forgot Oliver Stone's semi-autobiographical Platoon (1986) and The Deer Hunter (1978) which BOTH won the Best Picture Oscar in their respective years.
Paths of Glory (1957) is one of THE great anti-war movies of all time. the attack on the "ant hill" and the subsequent execution of four soldiers for "cowardness" when the attack failed, is based on a true French Army incident during WWI
also add both the 1930 AND 1979 film versions of All Quiet on the Western Front. Erich Maria Remarque's book should be required reading in every high school world wide. BOTH the book and 1930 movie were SO powerful that they were banned in many european and British commonwealth countries most notably Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Oh, and the 1930 movie with Lew Ayres as Paul Baumer and Louis Wolheim as "Kat" Katczinsky also won the Best Picture Oscar for that year

In the early eighties me and a friend relocated from Virginia to South Florida. On the way down we used a CB radio to try to avoid "Smokey". We tailed an 18 wheeler who was getting it done from Dillon, S.C. to Jacksonville, Fla. When he announced that he needed to refuel, we told him that we would like to buy him lunch for giving us an escort through S.C. and Ga.. At one point we asked him what he was hauling. he responded with, "music". Then he said that he was hauling the equipment for the band Red Rider. I asked him what their song "Lunatic Fringe" was all about. he responded with, Did you ever see the movie Apocalypse Now? That song was written about that movie.
