so I just sent an overnight package from california to Nevada yesterday for delivery monday.

checked the status and its in Memphis, TN, called up one of their unfriendly reps and was told thats the main hub and it has to go through there.

Really, California to Nevada via Tennesse, you dont need a map of the US to work out how idiotic that is., Outstanding business practice I'm sure you'll agree

Thats the Fedex model.

Everything goes through Memphis.  If you send a package from San Francisco to Oakland it goes to Memphis first.

I agree but the reason they do that is so they only have to have 1 shipping center. A lot less expenses. Where as if u had 3-4 shipping centers that triples your expenses. Especially since many of the flights happen to memphis anyway so whats the difference?

FedEx is the leader in the industry but every company screws up. Give them a call I'm sure they will reimburse you for not meeting their commitment. Still sucks your package didn't get there...

I'm sure it was a good business model when they started, as fuel was cheap.  It's hard to believe with today's fuel prices that adding a west coast and east coast hub wouldn't reduce their fuel costs enough to merit the investment.

NEVER ship anything important through USPS!!!  I can't emphasize that enough.  Some of you will remember my thread about someone ripping off my wife's (g/f at the time) pearl necklace, and no one doing anything about it or holding anyone accountable.  friggin goddamn lazy, worthless leaches.  And people wonder why they're friggin going bankrupt.  Be grateful for UPS and FedEx!  Are they perfect?  No, but please don't put yourself in the position to get fucked over like I did.

I gotta love the postal rant from ogmike

They are going broke because the brain trust has never charged enough.

But when they do go broke and you have to pay fed ex or ups 8 bucks to send 1 letter, come back here and tell us how great those companies are.  Yeah yeah i know, you dont need to send letters, well a hell of a lot of people still do in the country.

maybe you should have paid insurance on your wifes pearls, because you would have for sure got your money back and thats a fact.

I humped freight at the airport when I was in grad school.  If you were in the business, you'd know why they do it that way from a logistics standpoint.  Do realize all the extra capital expenses that would be required to deliver city to city without going through a hub?

I did buy insurance on the the pearls, and we were reimbursed.  But, that's not the point.  I'm sure you understand the idea that with women, it's sometimes impossible to assign a dollar value to certain belongings.  This was probably the only expensive thing I have ever bought her as a gift, and it meant a lot b/c we don't come from money, and she has been talking about these pearls for years.  She just never expected me to buy it.  She got a pair to replace them, but she cherished those specific pearls at a different level.

As far as the USPS, if you have ever had anything of extreme importance lost by them, you will understand how I feel.  I can assure you that for their pay scale, the level of accountability is way off the mark.  No one was willing to even investigate this until I made a big deal out of it.  I pretty much had to call a dozen different people for anything to be done, which I am still unsure if an investigation ever took place.  Doesn't it seem wrong that something could've have been stolen at the post office by one of the employees, and everyone's answer is to just fill out an insurance claim?  Why don't we investigate the matter, and get rid of the dirtbag that possibly stole it.  They're a joke.

Doesn't make any sense to have one.  You already have a plan flying (EG) from Seattle to Memphis and Memphis to Seattle every night.  If you add a West Coast hub, now you have to fly a plane from Seattle to and from Memphis, and from Seattle to and from the West Coast hub.

Also, with only one hub, you do not need to sort packages in Seattle.  Everything gets sent to Memphis.  With a West Coast hub, now you have to sort package in Seattle to send to one of the two hubs, and then sort again at the hub.

So, with two hubs, you have more sorting, and more flights.

Fred Smith, CEO of Fedex, was ranked the the 3rd best businessman of our time by Fortune Mag.  Thats right, 3rd, only behind Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.    He is always on CNBC and Fox giving interviews and economic forecasts.

The guy is pretty much a genius and his business model has made him a ton of dough.  10-15 years ago, if you would have said a company would overtake UPS you'd be admitted into a room with padded walls.

Anyway, since I work between the US and Italy, I use Fedex quite a bit.  Not perfect, but still would rate their services as very good.

I flew overnight freight for UPS (and others like Emery and Purolator) when they were using contract pilots to keep the Teamsters out (until they realized just how much the "contractors" were ripping them off) back in the mid 1980's.

the ONLY reason UPS started an overnight service is because the FedEx model PRINTS MONEY esp compared to passenger carriers. the ONLY "airline" stocks that I would EVER invest in are FDX, UPS and LUV (Southwest Airlines) and I would be cautious about LUV. the revenue per flight for BOTH FDX and UPS is unreal. it's about 20X that for a passenger carrier.

like ANY company FDX or UPS they will screw up now and then BUT the "business model" is GREAT. the ONLY companies with more "free cash flow" that those two are the "Five Families" oil companies. stock market "powerhouse" Apple Computer doesn't even come CLOSE.

I've used Fed Ex weekly for my job, receiving and shipping parts, for the past 3 years.  I've never had an issue with them, and my local Fed Ex is great.  The only times I've ever had an issue is when the weather was bad.  I haven't used UPS in years, but I wasn't a big fan of them.
