I posted this in the tech forum yesterday, but got no responses. looking for a bit of help here. read below for questions 1 and 2. thanks guys:
My 2006 42" Hitachi Ultravision Plasma is stuck on standby. I turn it on and the screen pops up for a half of a second and then it switches to standby and the red standby light just flashes. I found this on the internet:
Please try a hard reset. Unplug the TV from power supply and other units connected to it. Restart it after 30 minutes. This should drain all the charges and reset the unit.
If that doesnt help then its a hardware problem. You can try cleaning the unit from inside after taking it apart. There are high voltages present inside. Most likly the high voltage transformer as well as the horizontal transistor is bad. if you have no solid state repair experience, you will not be able to fix this set on your own as the circuits in these sets are complicated and there are safety issues you have to know and equipment you have to have.
If the set is still under warranty, immediately arrange for a repair and keep a record of all dates, names, phone numbers, and promises made. Finally, if your set is NOT under warranty, consider carefully whether to make a repair or buy a new set. New set prices have dropped sharply, and the difference between a repair and a new set may not be significant. Of course, you can wait until the set fails.
Now I have no business taking this thing apart. The hard reset didn't work, even after a full night of having nothing plugged into it. so it seems my 6 year old plasma is dead to me. So I have two questions:
1. what type of tv should I buy now? I still want a 42". I don't want 3D. Should I get another plasma, or should I get an LCD? Or what about an LED? I like to watch sports and movies. I don't play video games.
2. What the hell should I do with this broken plasma? something tells me that someone who has more patience and knowledge than me could fix this thing. It was working perfectly just 2 days ago.

LED is great and prices are very reasonable. I have a Sam Sung 40 LCD and I believe the new LED are cheaper than what I paid for my set although it is almost 4 years old.

LED is great bc the screen is brighter...LCD not too shabby either. I'd stay away from plasmas though. How well lit is the room your tv is going to be in? Get a 1080p with a great refresh rate to watch sports.....it makes a difference. I have a 46' Sony Bravia 1080p with a 240HZ refresh rate. By far the best tv I've ever had...........it's an LCD. I also have a 52' Samsung LED....that's ridiculous for sports too. GL

I've got a 46" LCD Vizio in my bedroom and a 65" LED Samsung in my living room. The Samsung is far superior.
Check out a website for Abes of Maine, the best price, selection, customer service ect. Plus they have zero sales tax, I highly recomend these guys for all electronics, nobody beats their prices.

I went with a 40" LED from Samsung. Paid $580 for it at Costco. It was pretty funny going to the "10 items or less" lane with a giant TV in my cart and nothing else. I was shocked at how light the TV is. Loving it so far.
Now i just need to do something with my broken plasma. Best Buy takes them back, I think. But what a pain in the ass

I have a 54" Sony Bravia and wouldn't trade it for any other TV. Sports are amazing on it especially Golf. Don't know if anyone else thinks golfs HD is amazing but I do. Makes watching Sunday golf good.

LED best overall picture but get at least one with a 240 hz refresh rate otherwise fast action sports or movies will be blurry. Fast action sports like hockey or movies to me look better on a Plasma which has a 600 hz refresh rate and have deeper blacks that LED's just cant match. I have both LED and Plasma.

Oddly enough, my Viera plasma just went out too with that dreaded seven blinking light then it shuts down. My buddy tells me it's the power main as well. Coincidently, my warrantey on that unit just expired two months ago. So now I have to haul out the Bravia from the bedroom to compensate for it now until I get it back from the repair shop.
Yeah, the plasma is that great that I'd rather have it repair for half the cost of a new set.

My next buy will be a plasma..............although I have a friend that has a DLP that is stunning, I just don't trust them..........& some of the LED/LCD's (@ 240Hz) still seem to have motion blur even if it's just slight. So far I have a hard time finding issues with the 1080p plasma's.

I have a Sony Viera that I love. Much more than my Samsung and LG LCD's. I had a DLP in the past. Picture was great, but the lamps are spendy to replace and I had to trash mine eventually.....just not very reliable.
