This famous "book" is purely a mathematical analysis of the game of blackjack and is easily found by Googling "blackjack strategy" or other similar search phrases. Its purpose is to make the player believe he/she will not win unless the cards they hold do not equal at least 17, which is the smallest value at which the dealer cannot take any more cards.
Lets consider the "true math" behind the situation described here. Unless the holder of 14 is using a common card-counting system, we can base our calculations using a standard 52 card deck (4 each of A thru K).
Of the 52 cards in the deck, 24 of them (46.2%) result in an instant loss, 20 of them (38.5%) result in a more favorable situation. When the player receives A or 2, the situation becomes worse because they are told by "the book" that they must take another card and the chances of the player busting out increase to 62.8% if they hold 16 and 54.9% if they hold 15.
When a dealer's up-card has a value of 10, there is a 46.15% chance that another card must be taken. And 30.8% of the remaining cards make the dealer's total over 21, even if the dealer has 12 showing.
All in all, the dealer will bust more often than players think. But they blindly believe that success is attained only by winning (or not losing) when they hold 17 thru 21. THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS WHEN YOU BUST!!!! And if you take a card, you will bust more than the dealer will because you have decreased the number of bad cards in the deck. Any time the dealer is forced to take a card in this situation, good results (for the player) happen more than bad ones do. On the rare occasions when the dealer is helped by a card that the blackjack player "should have taken", the blackjack player should know the only people who complain are those who think they know how to play because they can read a pre-printed card that tells them how they should play. dbear your math is a little off. If you want to assume this is single deck and he didn't have 2 7s there are only 22 cards left that would make him bust( not counting what the other guy at the table had) So that would drop Steel to a 43 % chance of busting instantly, but a 53% of losing without the dealer taking another card. So if you just want to take the simple math without getting into probabilities or anything the player who is willing to gamble that the dealer will bust will never be the winner in the long run as the dealer has at the minimum a 53 percent chance of winning if you don't take another card.

it happens all the time. sometimes the guy is counting cards by himself and he thinks he has a good live count and so he is staying on 15 or 16. =) and then wouldnt u know it the dealer busts and he looks like the smart-e-pants for not hitting on 15 or 16.

I don't know maybe it's just me if I wanted to socialize with people I would play craps, but on a blackjack table leave me the fuck alone and let me play how I want to play and save your strategies for yourself.

In the long run-a person who hits a 14 vs a dealer 10 will lose less money then a person who stands on a 14 vs a dealer 10. The math of blackjack has been the same for the last 35 years & will always be the same. There's nothing new under the sun as far as the math of blackjack goes. Playing according to Basic strategy will bring the edge the house has over you to its bare minimum-bottom line. You're absolutely still going to lose money over the long run using basic strategy in blackjack-you'll just lose at a slower pace then someone who doesn't play basic strategy-once again over the long run. The only way to beat blackjack long term is to know how to count cards and use a large betting spread in favorable situations. If you don't know how to count cards-following basic strategy at all times is the way to go.
