I play quite a bit, mostly computer... some casino. I'm a pretty strict basic strategy player and mostly a conservative bettor. But it would seem like if I sit down at a 10/500 table with 2K, I could pretty easily walk away with a couple hundred (if not $500 or more) with not many problems by just using a progression system, i.e. 10-20-40-80-160-320-500. I know it's a recipe for disaster if you use it a lot, however, I think I could get away with it long enough to walk away with some descent cash if I just do it, say 3-4 times and then drop the idea for good.
Have you ever tried this?

Don't even think about it. You will get into trouble with a progression system because of the splits and the double downs. It's unavoidable.
A simple count system is the only way to go. Keep your playing sessions brief and don't get greedy. If you want to make $1K on the blackjack tables, it's best to do it a few hundred at a time.

Yeah... I know. I'm sure it's a bad idea. As far as the splits and doubledowns go, I would have to use my best discretion. I mean if I have $320 on the table and the dealer has a 6 up against my 9,10, or 11, I would almost have to DD. But then I could still lose. So I probably wouldn't. I might try it once, but no time in the near future. I don't have 2K to burn. Then again, I may never.
It's just a bad idea in general though.

Never in my entire life have a I witnessed cheating in it's most obvious form than on offshore black jack.
I know. I learned the hard way. Know exactly what you mean.
I just play at the seedy 777 skill game places (Pot O Gold machines). I actually consider it a part time job and a hobby (I'm a degenerate) that makes me money. I do pretty well actually.

steel, i think the odds are similar if you did the same thing betting on games.
if that worked ... everyone would do it.
Exactly. Would you chase every sports bet you ever made?
Think about the scenario where you bet $100 on your first hand and lost. Then bet $100 on the next just to break even and lost (down $200). Then bet $200 just to break even and lost (down $400). Then bet $400 just to break even and then lost (down $800)... I think you get the point.
Regardless of what your initial bet size is it will only take 3, 4, or 5 loses on consecutive hands to get to a point where you are placing a proportionally large amount on the table just to break even. Does not sound like a fun position to be in.

Don't get me wrong, splits and double downs are the reasons you play blackjack. It's a player's big opportunity to take a shot at the casino. But you want to increase your chances by increasing your base wager when it's to your advantage, when you have a running count in your favor.

"I think I'm approaching 5,000 hours as well. Love the game".
I play with a giraffe figurine in my pocket to remind me not to stick my neck out too far. I sometimes picture another player at the table as a full-life giraffe when they play reckless. Helps me to play more often and better money management. Good Luck

Chase system will kill ya bro- I will say this, if I get a particularly good offer to try a new on line site with a good rep I will make a good size deposit. Then I will make some sports bets and about three weeks in I will walk into the casino. I will play some dice for about 10 minutes. I have to say, I have won almost every time on these short rolls. Makes you wonder don't it? Ditto with Poker. I do play a lot of on line poker but when I am on a new site, it seems I win more from inferior positions than I should. I will play ;particularly loose and stay on hands I would normally dump after the flop. Can you say runner runner? Sometimes, when someone is pulling all kinds of horrible beats out on me, I will ask them, are you new here?
