the North Dakota Fighting Sioux where denied an endorsement from the Tribal Council of the Standing Rock Sioux BUT I understand there are OTHER Sioux nations tribes that say they are HONORED by UND using the name because reflects favorably their warrior heritage. the Seminole nation in Florida had that same attitude about the FSU use of thieir tribe's name for their sports teams and esp football.
personally I think it's a bunch of crap. I can understand people being pissed by a name like "Redskins" which is considered a racial slur by Native American people BUT I can't understand the Standing Rock Sioux being opposed when a VERY successful NCAA Hockey program like UND uses the name "Fighting Sioux" for the reasons mentioned. I suspect they are angeling for some sort of "trademark" payments.
