Many advantages/disadvantages depending on where you live.
I know Verizon offers an HD package with all the premium movie channels, telephone, and fios internet for less than what my cable company charges. The cable "triple play" may be cheaper, but that doesn't include ALL of the movie channels. Verizon does charge more for DVR service, but in the long run your monthly bill will be less with Verizon. You will have to sign a contract with Verizon. ( 1 or 2 years once again depending on where you live - some regions may offer either 30 or 60 day grace periods if you're not satisfied )
If you live in a home. The fiber internet connection will be much faster than cable. Some apartment complexes run the Fios signal through the existing coax cable left from the cable company. This is becoming more rare now, because the cable company technically ownes those cables, plus Verizon is better off running fiber due to the bandwidth limitations of the coax. It all depends on the building itself, whether they have an exclusive contract with the cable company, whether they own the interior cables, etc. I know of buildings that have the signal run both ways here in NYC. It may depend on if the building is a CO-OP or not.
You will NOT have premium on demand channels, such as HBO Showtime, etc.. where you can watch a movie, etc. when you want. I don't mean indemand - you will still be able to purchase PPV events, but you won't be able to dial up soft core porn on showtime whenever you'd like.
Verizon offers up many more channels than my current cable provider ( NYC-TWC) NFL Network, Red Zone Channel, and HDNet, just to name a few. TWC NYC really pushes a local news channel here: NY1, but its really garbage - if I want local news I can go to one of my network affiliates instead of watching NY1 - which doesn't offer any live remote shots ( That's if you even care about local news)
I have heard "off the record" conversations that a deal between Directv and Verizon is in the works which may bring NFL Sunday ticket to Verizon subscribers soon.
IMO Verizon wins hands down

I have FIOS, I chose them because I hate Cablevision. I haven't had any problems over the last almost 2 years that I have had it. Only one negative I have about it, the MSG networks are not in HD because Cablevision is there competitor and won't let Verizon broadcast them.

Get rid of all, just splice from the neighbors and you will save money.
Serious answer (not that you care what I have to say) I would never go with Fios, I am quite sure they have long contracts and we lived in a place that had it and the wiring is a nightmare, I also didnt like their prices relative to Comcast.

neighbors have dish
they mentioned a 2 year contract with a $360 early termination fee that depletes $15 every month. i dont like that very much and probably will not go with fios but still can use them for leverage with comcast

We stayed in a place in between our end residence and it had Fios, it was a disaster, this monster contraption which took up a ton of this half closet, then it seemed like Fios had it out for the Comcast which was already there, they trashed everything that was Comcast, wires everywhere, it was a total mess..then I dont know how the crap you get it out once you get it in.
Comcast has deals running all the time and the whole contract issue was the total turnoff for me.
Cox Communications here is trying to edge in the contracts, I think most are trying to do so..which is just to stop turnover and smack the hand of the consumer.

If you're not tekky at all you probably won't need fios. I've had it for 1.5 years & love it. Never had an outage, have 35/35 internet speed (consistently) which no cable co. can come close to (don't believe their BS), & the HD is noticeably clearer than anything save OTA. The only thing I miss is the sports package that Directv offered. The dvr is also not my fav, but after having a Tivo nothing else really compares.
