DALLAS (AP)—If Justin Willis adds to his career lead in passing touchdowns at SMU, it probably won’t be as the starter in new coach June Jones’ run-and-shoot offense.
The two-year starter and former Conference USA Freshman of the Year is listed at No. 3 on the depth chart after Jones on Monday narrowed the starting quarterback competition to a pair of freshmen: Bo Levi Mitchell and Braden Smith.
Willis, a junior with 51 career TD passes, was an honorable mention all-conference selection last season, when he set a school record for total yards with 3,643.
“After going through all of the tapes, I felt like Bo and Braden had a better understanding of the offense,” Jones said. “I think they’re executing a little bit better, so we’re going to give them the reps. We will continue to give the other guys reps too, but those guys will get the focus.”

Well put. This is typical June Jones fashion here. He likes to take his recruits and put them in the game. He will do everything to develop his recruits. He could give a $hit about the other players no matter how good they are. This has nothing to do with the other QB's looking better, but it has everything to do with his ego. When June took over in Hawaii his first season they tied for the WAC title. He had no recruits at the time but took over a very experienced team. In my opinion he got lucky and came in at the right time. He is now taking advantage and cashing in on his success. SMU with junes offense will get in maybe 3-4 TD's. He is purely offensive minded and has no idea how to play defense. If rice has a good offense look for them to score 50+ points tonight. I have no idea about the rice offense so if anyone knows about Rice then maybe they can shed some insight. Point for me is I look for the over in this game to hit.
