#1 Posted: 8/8/2012 12:53:05 PM Boise State vs. Michigan State (-7)
Michigan State is returning 8 starters from one of the nation’s
best defenses last year, however they do lose worthy whom was a stud both
stuffing the run and creating pressure up the middle. This really helped stud
hot head defensive lineman Gholston. Gholston played like his cousin was
supposed to for the jets, and when he isn’t causing dumb penalty’s he is making
big time plays. He will go up against Nate Potter’s (former all American)
replacement Faraji Wright. After doing some research on right he is an
undersized athletic tackle who struggles with his strength… Ghoslton won’t be
able to run right around him, but should be able to run through him... Also
Boise states two (of 3) returning starters were out this spring so this line
will only have the fall to come together as a patch work unit. The line backing
core for Michigan State is one of the best in the country, all three have a specialty
including run stuffing pass rushing and coverage. This will be important as DJ harper is an
explosive 6th year runner that is very excited for his shot to be
the main ball carrier. The secondary is also outstanding with 3 returning
starters with great corners who have the ability to shut down receivers which
will be key against Boise state because the strength of this team is in the
wide receiver position especially Matt Miller who set freshman records (how
much of that was due to kellen Moore his brother though). On offense Michigan State
has some questions to answer, but can lean on 4/5 returning offense lineman and
power back bell to ease Jr. quarterback Andrew Maxwell into his role. Bell is a
stud back who has the advantage of what is being called the best Michigan state
returning o line in years. They also have baker who is a stud himself giving
them one of the country’s best running back duos. Maxwell is a kid who has watched cousins get
the job done for two years, and understands what it takes to play quarterback.
He has better physical tools then cousins did, but cousin’s leadership kept Michigan
State together so that will be a big loss. The wide receivers are deep they have
5 players that can contribute. They have 5 players that have both size and
speed, I like 3rd wr soph Tony lipset a lot. The advantage that
Maxwell will have is that he has thrown to a lot of these guys a lot as they went
the starters, Cunningham and martin were. However the sprained knee in spring
ball did cause him to lose half of his reps with the new wr this spring. Boise Counters on defense with only 2
returning starter. They have virtually no experience at defensive end with only
one player from the unit having ever played a collegiate down before. The best
way to rattle a new qb is to get pressure on him, and Boise will struggle to do
that without blitzing. However Boise state does have a promising JC transfer named
Demarcus Lawrence who did have a big spring game. I’m not worried too much about
him in his first game on a stage like this. Michigan State should be able to run the ball
right down Boise throat. The only real counter is JC Percy who is a tackling
machine, but could get caught up in blocks. It’s a lot harder to roam when you
three stud dlinemen have gone onto the NFL. Jamar Taylor is a stud corner, and
there other corner Jarrell Gavin’s is a playmaker coming off a knee injury. Boise safeties have potential to end up as a
dynamic duo. In close games such as this could be it becomes important to look
at special teams. While Boise has been bad in the past at field goals this year
is likely to just get worse they have 4 kickers trying out for the job and according
to reports they will all struggling during spring practice. Spartans have a
proven two year kicker who is 32/39 in the last two years. I love D’Anotoni as
a coach, he always gets his teams ready to play (doesn’t keep them the most discipline)
however I think you can make a very strong case that Peterson is the best coach
in the country, and giving him a whole offseason to prepare makes me nervous,
but this is a major rebuilding job and will take some time for him to get Boise
back to the powerhouse they have come to be known by. The crowd should be
insane, as it is the only game that matters on Friday night in prime time. It’s
not every day that East Lansing gets a night game that means this much! The
line makers are giving Boise respect, but I think too much.

#2 Posted: 8/8/2012 1:08:12 PM well elz there is a good amount of buzz about the game. I have no clue who wins though. I'd say Boise might need it more. Heading to the Big East next year beating msu could go a long way in recruiting etc. I have no clue about this gm or any other wk 1 gm. also elz in case you're wondering i'm not a fan of msu or any college team. Should be a good game i'll watch it on tv BOL to you |

#5 Posted: 8/8/2012 1:21:11 PM Great writeup. This is one of my bigger plays. Both with QB question marks, but bottomline, Michigan St will have one of the more dominant D's in the Big 10, they return stud offensive line, stud rb vs completely revamped D line of Boise. This is a no brainer to me at -7 or less for Mich St. Classic "Strength vs. Weakness" here, AND it's in Mich st. C'mon. I know Peterson will have his boys up for this with the whole offseason to prepare, but too many question marks and too overmatched in the trenches. GL

#9 Posted: 8/8/2012 2:25:13 PM ON a side not Phil Steele gives michigan a 5 point homefield advantage which means that a neutral site game would be michigan state -2... I think that is a little high but deff think homefield advantage is a factor in this one |

#10 Posted: 8/8/2012 2:47:14 PM Boise has (22) 5th year seniors and (3) 4th year seniors. They also have (16) 4th year Juniors. This game is right up Boise's alley. They crave these games. These kids have had all summer to prepare for Mich. St. Mich States athleticism DOES NOT scare anyone! These games are the games Boise always wins! Give them 30 days to prepare (bowl game) or a whole summer to prepare for a BCS team - it completely plays into their favor! I am hoping this line hits 8 or 9 points and you can give me Boise all day! |

#11 Posted: 8/8/2012 4:03:13 PM Elz, great write up man. Very informative. I agree with a lot of you guys as it is a huge game for Boise. But the fact of the matter IMO is, Boise is flat out overmatched in this matchup. Sparty with control the ball all game, and BSU won't be able to much with the ball in the little time they have it. 35-17 sparty |

When I make up lines, the hook will cost you 85 cents. You can have Mich St -3 -195. |

#15 Posted: 8/8/2012 7:34:38 PM MSU hasnt lost at home in two years, MSU has an outside shot at NC, so to say this is a big game for Boise and not say it for MSU is dumb. MSU has turned the page on their program, back to back 11 win seasons and they have top 5 maybe defense this year that alone should guarantee them a shot to win every game on the schedule. Boise has never lost that many contributing players during this 5-7 year run from mediocrity, it's basically a completely new and inexperienced team, MSU all day, BIG! |

#16 Posted: 8/8/2012 11:45:54 PM Tough one for me to pick....2 of the best coaches in all of CFB. It is possible that the line is perfect.
I just need to do more work on this one. Good write up though. I kept losing my spot in that long paragraph, but good work man. |

#17 Posted: 8/9/2012 12:13:44 AM nickydyme - MSU has zero chance of playing in the NC game. I agree that Dantonio is a good coach, but he's been having success lately when other teams are down. Ohio St and Michigan have been down. Let's see if he can win 11 games again when his 2 biggest rivals have their best football in front of them. The QB Cousins made this offense click the last 2 years. No easy task replacing him. I could see them losing 5 games.
BOISE ST. - TOSS UP
CENT. MICH - WIN
NOTRE DAME - LOSS
EAST MICH - WIN
OHIO STATE - LOSS
INDIANA - WIN
IOWA - WIN
MICHIGAN - LOSS
WISCONSIN - LOSS
NEBRASKA - TOSS UP
NORTHWESTERN - WIN
MINNESOTA - WIN |

#18 Posted: 8/9/2012 12:29:46 AM BigRed--appreciate your thoughts but i disagree, MSU defense might be best in country if not pretty close, they are nasty and stacked at every position and defense wins championships...yes losing Coisins is huge but they have one of the best o-lines in football and a potential first round rb in the backfield, best kicker and punter in big10, your analysis of the games could be for any team, be realistic please, Boise is back to earth this year, ND game at home avenging their loss last season seems more likely, OSU will be good game, that is a toss up, Michigan is overrated and MSU will continue their dominance over them 5 in a row, Wisconsin lost too much from last season's team, O'brien is no Russell Wilson and Toon is gone and their o-line too, Nebraska is a toss up as well since they didnt play well against them last year, NC is a longshot but it is doable...more than any other team in the conference for sure |

#19 Posted: 8/9/2012 12:33:45 AM Great write up..hope to see more of them.Logically,MichST SHOULD win by 10 or more, but I think Boise is much better coached.Next to Saban,Urban,Miles,Chizik ( Im an Auburn man),Spurrier,Ckelly,Stoops Petterson might be the best coach in the country.Michigan St always seems to sputter when they are picked high.Boise has A LOT of holes to fill but they just overachieve..They keep winning these early season games.Ive just have a gut feeling that Sparty will dominate the game, but the score wont indicate it.Im gonna play that MSU pulls out a can..MichSt30-20 |

#20 Posted: 8/9/2012 12:37:56 AM @War--you lose all credibility when putting Gene Chizik on a list with Saban, Meyer, Miles, and Kelly for best/top coaches in cfb lollll
And you are wrong about Dantonio, every year his teams are getting better and better |

#21 Posted: 8/9/2012 1:10:26 AM @nickey-Chizik is a better than Kelly in my opinion. When u have a National Title u are just on a different Level-thats just a fact of life.He has one of the best pedigrees.Spurrier will tell Chizik is one of the finest coaches in the country.Dantonio is a good coach, but he lost to a BAD Notre Dame team Ly.This is a big yr for Chizik with losing his best player to Mary Janee and having 2 new coordinators.People are forgetting Auburn redshirted a half dozen players that probably would ve started. The off line is suspect, loaded at Rb,te,wr,dl,lb.Auburn wont lose to Dabo ( Alabama's next coach in 10+yrs }2yrs in a row especially when they beat em 11 straight I believe.Sammy being gone is MONSTRONEOS to Auburn..World get ready for the starting debut of Tre Mason who will rush for 180+sept.1..Boom is in fantasy land on this game.WVa could ve scored a 100pts in Gator. |

#22 Posted: 8/9/2012 1:19:17 AM Boise doesnt have much coming back but they do have some good players back on off, line and that stud frosh back at Wr..good oline plus great Wr..its on how good the Qb plays and I would bet Peterson has him ready, but I dont think they have a frontrunner yet@ Qb..in the end it wont be enough. This Mich St team might be the best in my lifetime and I turn 40 today. Its laughable that Michigan is ranked ahead of Sparty..I believe St is head and shoulder the best team in B10. |
